This has allways puzzled me. Computers used to be a job to aspire to. Not anymore.
Programming is difficult, complicated and a pain. It takes years to learn the bits needed.
I have been doing it professionally for 18+ years, mainly Oracle back end database bank/office systems. I have also done a bit of web front end JSP/JAVA and PHP work. So i know what i am talking about.
£20k, really, is that all your offering for years of experiance and possibly a degree education?
I can see why people open up tea rooms or clean out bins for a living. The hassle is not worth
the money. Companys seem to want people todo everything and pay as little as possible.

I would advise anyone who is heading into computers not to. Thanks to the cheap import of workers in IT mainly from India and old russian. It has killed the rates contract and perm. Study things they can't out sourced. Practical stuff that everyone needs like an Electrician or plummer.
Businesses are based on strong IT.

Hence after the degree in Computing I'm not really looking for a career in it, I can do things more interesting that pay better...However, that said, remember IT is not just about programming. Don't throw in the IT towel because programming rates aren't all they were - you could always get a few years experience and then move up the Sol/Sys Arch route towards CTO style jobs - trust me, they pay well if know what you are doing!

I also completed a degree in programming, graduated 2 years ago, i now work in a completely different field of work which has no relevence to my degree what so ever, luckily i was able to find an employer who was willing to train me into a completely different career on the basis of being "degree educated"
and i earn more money than my peers who did go into programming, despite many of them being brigher than me
its a crying shame, as i knew some tremendously talented programmers, who are earning nowhere near what we were believed we could potentially earn 5 years or so ago when we were looking into what to study at degree level,
it always seemed that of all my A level subjects, computing was the one to take to degree level as everyone always reminded you "oh theres a lot of money in computers", plus the fact im a complete geek and love programming and computers and technology! (and also cars of course!)
to my knowledge the highest earner off my course 2 after graduation who is working as a programmer is on 25k and he was truely gifted.
but then i know people from other degree courses who graduated with 1st class degrees and are unable to find work in their particular field
I believe its the governments fault for pushing too many people into doing degrees, hense why there's so many people who completed one degree or another (with a 2.1 or above) now working stacking shelves in a supermarket
Programming is a complicated job, more so than most apprieciate, and add in the factor of continuous retraining/updating of knowledge and you have some highly skilled people,
to ask all this for 20k ? ,
your asking for someone who :
will of completed GCSE's/ A levels in difficult subjects with grade C or above
Completed a degree course at 2.1 or above
job hunted, got a job in I.T. as a programmer, worked for 5 years or so becoming and expect in their field
20k for all that is a bit shocking really!
sorry for the essay probably stating the obvious

At the end of the day, its all about supply and demand. If there are enough people will the skills wanting a job, then the salary goes down. Introduce a shortage of skilled workers ......
I've been working in I.T. and now Data Networks for 28 years and I've got a pretty good job, but I wouldn't like to be hunting for one now!

In which area? and i earn more money than my peers who did go into programming, despite many of them being brigher than me

i did a lot of oracle, as i elected mostly database modules, and a lot of php
really though i chose not to work in computing, i just didnt fancy it lol
plus i know the work will end up being more and more outsourced,
so i should probably get off my high horse and yep its supply and demand
