what do you think the short term (ie next 6 months) effect will be.

there is a huge amount of political gain to be made by this hold and influence on the market. could this lead to a false bottom of the market on which a rise starts (a false bottom that gordon brown et al hope will strengthen over time, and not go horribly wrong?)

i think the temptation to influence will be far too great to avoid... and i think it will work.

this is going to be gordon's falklands moment...

The government should be an excellent mortgage provider as the can borrow at rates lower than commercial organisations. The problem will be if the use their competitive advantage to take business from commercial firms.

you have to assume they won't but with their stake, it may start to stir up a bit of activity in the money lending market and kickstart everything off again. if they set president for sensible lending criteria (and now they are in a perfect position to take control of the whole boom / bust cycle) it will encourage the private sector to follow suit... i think it's a great thing, and i'm saying that despite my propensity to goosestep down marlow high street.

Have you left space for the generic small hatch back minus engine and gearbox propped up on bricks instead of axle stands?

Barclays trying to stand on their own two feet via share issue.

Offer is still there, unknown whether they'll raise the funds required.
