Gas man came out today to do a first inspection of the boiler for one of their all in contracts. Said can't cover it as there is a leak from the heat exchanger - needs a new one. Parts 266 + 3 hours @ 78/hour..

You can buy the boiler for about 400!

Anyway looking on tinternet the part is 70 quid by the looks of things, pretty simple to change, question is am I allowed to fix the boiler providing I don't mess with any of the gas bits?

Must be some heating engineers on here that can enlighten me

I suspect you're not allowed to touch it although I may not have taken this into account when I replaced the PCB in mine.

AFAIK you're not allowed to be paid to touch it without Corgi registration but that doesn't stop you DIYing, whether your insurers take that view following the explosion is a whole different question wink

Be careful - some boilers are positive pressure meaning the case is sealed. You can't just open and close it. Pottertons if iirc.

Take a pic of the offending part in situ and post it up here, i'm sure me along with a few others will be able to tell you how easy it will be to do. You are ALLOWED to fix it, just not be paid to fix it. BG or whoever your cover is with don't need to know who fixed it.

Firstly HSE rules say that REGARDLESS of whether you get paid, you must be COMPETENT.

CORGI registered engineers will prove their competency if anything goes wrong with a flash of the card. Anyone else would have to take on the HSE in court in these circumstances. Bear in mind that in any case HSE regulations state clearly that you must be 'competent'...same rules as above apply should anyone ever find out you did it....

However, now I've cleared that up again..
Changing a heat exchanger is a piece of piss on those Heatline boilers. There's a fair amount to strip out, but if done methodically it shouldn't be beyond anyone with a brain.

But....
If I knew anyone who had a Heatline boiler I would suggest that they remove it from the wall, stamp on it, and throw it over the hedge.

I've only ever had the misfortune to work on two and both were just falling apart as I attempted to make them watertight. Just st.

Fixed mine a couple of times, condensation Baxi, piece of piss, fan unit went south, cost 180 to buy, PCB has gone south, resoldered the relays, service it and all sorts, just need to be capable really, if you're not a competant DIYer i wouldn't, but thats just me.

Cheers Ferg, we knew that already, hence trying to get it on the BG plan!

Already fixed one leak in it - an O ring, quoted 3 hours labour to fix, I changed it and had it going again in under an hour. Guess once things have been dislodged though the fun will start keeping it water tight!

We will change it out I guess, but the extra couple of grand to do so will sting a bit at the moment

If I can fix it cheap for now, it will do!

Cheers

So if it blows up, the HSE will be prosecuting what's left of you so that you will have to pay compensation to yourself for blowing yourself up...?

I had to fix mine infront of the halfwit nobber the gas board sent out to fix boiler.
A switch on the front panel was bust. new switch turned up but only 2 wires on it instead of 3. usless tosser scratching his head didnt know what to do, I said why not cut the missing wire off old switch and solder onto new switch.
"that won't work" said nobber.
So I cut off old wire and soldered it to solder post on new switch infront did him. The look on his face was pricless when I connected the new switch up and it worked.

Ok pics... Not actually convinced it is leaking yet, OH did say that he wiped his hand along the bottom of the panel in the pic and it was wet. Just ran the heating for a while and nothing.

Badly stained as the joint at the top of the pic was leaking ( O ring that I already changed. )

Will check at the weekend in the morning with a cold boiler and see if I can see any signs of damp. It doesn't lose pressure in the CH system at all currently.

To change the exchanger looks like a complete strip down!

Cheers!

Excellent, good effort!
The 'socket' those 'o'-rings fit into are such a cheap pressing that they often leak from there.

Shouldn't cost a couple of k for a boiler swap out, as long as you get someone who doesn't take the pi$$.

I had a new vokera fitted last year for 1150 quid all in.....still not cheap but feckin around with this thing might be a false economy?

I've recently been quoted £3.5K for installation of a new gas boiler... so I bought a chainsaw instead. Maybe they cost more in the effluent South East?

I don't think you could do a boiler change properly for that price.

(Sucks air in through teeth). I don't think you could do a boiler change properly for that price...... ooooh, no. Well first all that shelving's gotta come out and I don't like the look of that copper. There was a dodgy batch of copper came in from Poland round about when this would've been fitted so that'll have to go. The flue's all to cock and a new one of them is...well, if you can GET them and I'm backed up wiv bookings until April but I could squeeze you in if I can find someone to take on some of my other work if you get my drift like.......
