Urine more than mildly tepid on this one. Baby gti is nearly 11 months and goes to nursery one day per week. They offer to provide good quality home-made food included in the fee.

mrs gti phones up today to see how she is, as she does every week. She's told he has had homemade soup, bread etc for lunch, which is fine. I collect him and when i read his sheet from today i find he has had soup, bread and CHIPS!!! for lunch, and beans on toast for tea.

Being curious, i checked last week's sheet, only to find he had good meals for lunch and tea, but was given chocolate cake as well because it was someone's birthday.

My question is am i over-reacting? is giving a baby chips, chocolate and beans on toast acceptable, or have the nursery overstepped the line? He has good home-made meals the rest of the week, so it's only one day, so should i let this go, have words, or be looking for a new nursery sharpish? Just to add they are OFSTED registered and seemed to come well recommended.

Not sure how an 11-month old eats beans on toast, but anyway, when he gets to 12 months and First Birthday, wouldn't you give him a bit of cake?

But hang on - 11 months old - nursery...? Doesn't nursery school kick in at 3-4 years?

nooo thats sounds really gross!!

On a serious note as someone who works in this field, the chocolate cake I would discount if it was someones birthday, so yes over reaction on that, the chips however I would look into, speak to your nursery nicely about it and express your concerns, maybe they were cooked in a healthy way, or maybe not and they are having them every week.

Children need a variety of food and wont always be put in the healthy catergory, ask to see their policies and procedures on food rotation etc.

yes he will have chocolate cake for his birthday, which will be white chocolate as its healthier. He eats toast quite easily, tidier than mrs gti at times!

Nursery here is from 6wks to 4yrs.

Exactly. If you don't like the care they provide, one or other parent should stay at home and bring the kiddies up properly.

Tiny bit of cake (as in 1 inch cube for a kid that age) yes possibly, chips absolutely not.

Private day nursery can start from 3 months and an 11 months old can easily eat beans on toast, probably not in the same way you do tho, unless you have bad table manners hehe

Yes, you're being an utterly deranged pillock smile

It's not like they're going to have been force feeding pounds of chips down your baby's neck, it's POTATO.

All things in moderation. Sure if it was chips 5 days a week washed down with Sunny D I might have a word, but once a week? Hardly going to hurt is it. Same with chocolate cake - what exactly do you think it's going to do to him?

Baby goes ONE day per week. Mrs gti works two days per week, the other day the inlaws have baby. I believe that the social interaction of kids together, even at this age has a positive effect.

edited to add: I know it sounds stupid, but we really try hard to give him a varied diet of home-made foods and the idea of giving him chips was not something i would have considered this young.

I am not a snob tho, and am sat here eating chips from the kebab shop, but i still wouldn't feed the baby on them, not for a long while yet

Cake not a problem. Beans in toast is fine and very nutritional. Chips I only let my daughter have when she was about 2, and then only once in a while.

Our wee one will be going at 6 months because we cant AFFORD to stay home and look after her, I too would have issues with the chips - but maybe not the cake.

Can you not have a chat with them and see if they can take into account your preferences?

It does. And you have the right as a parent to be concerned for his care. But I do think you might be slightly over reacting.

Zen.

Birthday cake is a treat, to have excluded your baby from this would have been worse. Children need to experience a wide range of foods, especially in a social situation.

Unless you noticed a marked change in babies behaviour the I do think you are overreacting.

That could be done without abandoning her for the day.

To be honest i thought i was, but as i have never had to bring up a child before now, i am learning as i go along and therefore am most likely over cautious and over-reacting.
