a few 04 cv8 newbe questions
Discussion
hello every one im james and i will be in the market for a cv8 5.7 eairly next year, at the moment i drive a astra coupe turbo which is tuned to 290bhp, i have always driven vauxhalls since 17.lol
i have heard horror storys about the 5.7's gearbox's with 5th & 6th gears. so can i please ask a few questions?
is there any way of checking for the selector problems ie was the problem only from-to a certain production number.
i know it wont be economical but how many miles do you get to a normal tank ?
how much does a full tank cost?
how much are normal brake discs and pads from vaux?
and what is your honest opinion of the v8.
any help would be great im just trying to do as much reseaech as i can
p.s sorry for the long post

Engine is great, but needs loud exhaust to give the maximum grin factor! For me the overall car/engine package makes up for any shortfalls. Maybe I'm just biased, but so what...

Hi James,
My gearbox went at 60k ish and was quoted at 8k replacement. Selector issue on 5th and 6th. When it goes it goes so you should notice on a test drive.
Costs about £65 to £70 to fill up for 360 miles.
No idea on brakes.
Would suggest you get a fettled version from a member or Monkfish/Picadors/RapidGB who know the cars. You will end up modding anyway if you have doen your Astra.

thanks for the info guys, its only the thaught of a £8k gearbox replacement hanging over my head what is worrying me as it will be a daily driver, petrol and tax does not bother me.
and i know just because the gearbox problem is about, it doesnt mean mine will go, but with my luck.lol

If you did have to replace a CV8 box you would be better off replacing it with the M12 variant (TUET2066) which has shorter ratios and was standard in the UK 6.0VXR. I changed mine just for the better ratios. They are totally interchangeable. Mine cost me approx £2300 landed from shop in Texas. Surface freight took about a month.
Vauxhall's prices for most parts are ridiculous.

Brand new they are tight/heavy/notchy I had a 5,000 mile VXR8 and then a replaced gearbox. While not whining now, its still tight and reverse needs a little roll forward to engage. Just drive before you buy
The last 2 cars I had also had the T56.. same issues. Id be surprised if there was one which did go into reverse nicely all the time!
If its good when you get it you are probably fine. There are a few boxes at the wreckers too so a cheap replacement shouldn't be a major issue.

What's with all the gearbox problems? Done nearly 70k in mine and not a single problem with gears or selection. Did I miss something? Or have I just been lucky?
Hi James,Edited by moosepig on Tuesday 14th October 23:30
1. There is only ONE engine and it has 8 cylinders configured in a 90* V and made by Chevrolet.
2. The manual 6 speed was described as "well it's a truck box when alls said and done" by a Holden sales (prevention) manager to me. Why one earth would you need six gears with all the torque of the LS motor. If you did need six gears it would be nice to have matched ratio's in it(for a car anyway).
3. The 4 speed Auto boxes are ultra reliable, rock on the strip, and are stressless in nose to tail traffic jams.
Hope you do upgrade to a proper motor and Good Luck mate.
thanks again for the replys and comments
so outher than the selector issue is there any thing else i will need to look out for outher than the ordanery checks when buying a car. or is this the only weak point in monaro?
any known electrical issues?
sorry again for asking so many questions
cant wait to own a proper car.
even if my astra is as quick as a ro!! speed isnt everything.
