Im going to get re-roofing my Garage soon, and i was wondering what would be the best stuff to use?

i was thinking of useing sheets of sheets of hardboard then putting roofing felt ontop?

as it is, it has that crappy asbestos/concrete sheets. a bit leaky and crap imo.

now im no DIY expert, actually only ever put up a set of shelfs and made a bed, but what would be wrong with using what i suggested? are there any other better stuff to do it with?

If hardboard gets a bit damp if falls apart, use some plywood and some decent felt.

Alternatively go with corrugated tin but not if you're going to spend any time in there when its raining, hammers like a noisy thing.

aye didnt want to go corigatted tin(the stuff its got its corragated atm), for the sound and heat issue, will be in there working on bikes, and wanted something that will last if it gets a bit wet.

so plywood will still hold up if it gets a bit wet? any other woods that do that that are not too pricey

Well the best stuff is WBP ply. 18mm.

Or you could use OSB.

I wouln't hardboard it though. You may also need to put extra rafters in as the ply or OSB needs to be supported at 400mm centers, alos are you going to felt it yourself? as it would be better using torch on felt as its a garage and not a shed, it will last alot longer.

If its asbestos you'll need council approved specialists to remove and dispose of it, not a DIY job.
As for replacing it, use 18mm ply or bitumen coated OSB then felt it.

That depends on the type of asbestos. Most of the sheet stuff is fine and just needs care and a face mask. It'll need wrapping up, but when I did our garage we got out of the car with masks on and double wrapped asbestos to find the skip uncovered and a kid playing in itrolleyes

I used 22mm OSB plus a layer of roofing felt, overlapping from the top to the bottom by about a foot on a custom size shed that I had to build from scratch. The felt is held on with specific roofing felt nails, with whopping heads. No leaks at all.

its not the blue stuff??? i think thats the deadly stuff, its the "good" asbestos

  • as good as it gets regarding your health*
as my bro was walking over it to get a ball or something, went thro the roof and we just got someone out of the yellowpages to come out and stick another sheet on.

Put a pitched roof on it and tile it in wink

Well if you are doing it yourself then you can only realy use normal shed roof felt, but it wouldn't last as long a proper torch on felt.

also taking the asbestos off will not be a problem, just try not to make dust, and wear a quality mask etc.

I'd say GRP on 18mm ply. Easy DIY job using 'car' type technology that we're used to.

Nice finish, smooth and grey, very waterproof.

You can coat the panels inside the garage then fix to the roof and GRP tape the joints.

OSB or waterproof ply is what you want.

Re the waterproof coating I've use EPDM before now and found it excellent.

It's all deadly if the fibres get released, but provided the sheets are in tact there is no real problem. But don't break it up to put it in bags, the sheets need to be placed in the skip whole. And if the corners or edges are frayed be very careful.
