A question for any BiB out there -
On Sunday I was pottering out of Whalley in Lancashire when I spotted a van and camera but on the way out of the village center just before where the road changes from 30 to national.
The road on from this point is wide open & stright and you can see clearley right to the chevron where the limit changes.
Yes it will catch drivers out but not the ones that speed in the village and are a danger.
Could not even say it was a scamera there to make the most cash - if he had set up in the village (knowing the area he could have put his hat out for a collection he would have been that popular) He would get the no brainers who are and accidents waiting to happen.
But protecting a stright road that leads up a hill to some trees - just loses the Bib any respect.
So why - I'm just at a loss - I support speed enforcment but where it keeps people safe.
The same Bib must know where the accidents happen better than me as its the same poor sod who has to clear up after the same.
So why ?

Why do you support speed enforcement at all..."where it keeps people safe..."?
I don't understand - you seem to think there is a link between speed and safety.
Surely, improvement in skills and thus quality of driving is most important.
Do a search on this site - this subject has been discussed at great length and in some depth.
Most accidents which result in some sort of injury occur at lower speeds. Pedestrians walking in front of cars is also a common problem. More Green Cross Code!

I posted about much thw same thing a few weeks ago - plod on an empty, open stretch of the A4 between Calne and Marlborough, that used to be a 3-lane carriageway years ago before they built the A4.
No matter what the "safety"
wits may say, there is a world of difference between enforcing speed limits that are sensible (outside schools, accidents black spots ets)and playing Tax Collectors on empty sections of NSL former trunk road or motorways.
IMHO plod are losing a lot of the little respect thay had left by pulling stunts like these.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Not sure what you are getting at... (just curious BTW)
You don't think there should be any speed limits?
Speed limits shouldn't be enforced?
Yes, no speed limits and no enforcement. Get rid of road markings, traffic lights, speed humps and cameras. Then lets see who the really safe drivers are?

The ones who crash the least...?lol
Ah the what did the romans ever do for us argument!
I guess our Bib friends on here are keeping out of this as they know and probally feel like us.
And yes its been posted before but would like an answer to why?.
I personally want speed limits enforced where they make a differance - I like the idea of cameras on traffic lights - I like the German idea of cameras for tailgate'ers - I really want to be safe.
Bib are also human and have families and kids so what was he doing? I see it so often is it something the bib train for if so what does the name of the training day start off as?
Most coppers are reasonably sensible people, traffic probally see more in a shift to know where speed actually could be a contributory factor than anyone else and the human fallout an accident causes most of them work to keep the roads safe.
But then you meet our chap in his van guarding a hedge an two trees. With best part of £50k(guess) of kit.
Ho hum best get on and do some work!

Speed limits shouldn't be enforced?
Dangerous driving is the only thing that should be enforced.
If someone's no danger to themselves or anyone else does it really matter what speed they're doing or if they've just dropped an E?
You of all people should see safety as th emost important factor...
Its a war! They say speed is dangerous we disagree.
They say speed is dangerous we say inappropriate speed is dangerous.
They say speed is dangerous we say it should be enforced outside schools etc.
I have noticed this change across this site over last few months how long before we get
They say speeding is dangerous we agree.
Government get own way again through slow brain washing

I say, exceeding the speed limit is against the Law.........end of story.

In my book, so is blind obedience to it.
Inappropriate use of speed is dangerous, ie speeding outside schools, in built up areas, screaming round country lanes in the fog at national limit.
Modern cars when driven responsibly with driver attention can be driven completely safely if conditions allow.
I used to work on the Isle of Man where there is no spped limit apart from built up areas and the odd bit of road. People over there drove quickly if they wanted to knowing they where not going to get nailed for speeding by a scamera. The IoM police force did enforce the speed limit in villages and large fines where given out for breaking the limit.
The best part when I was there was having a Caterham 7 (quick one) being chased by a Tuscan S chased by 911. They nailed me (doing 100mph)! Caterham beat both of them!
The misconception is that speed kills full stop. It maybe a contributary factor in some accidents, where this is the case how many times has the speed limit been broken? I think back to multiple vehicle accidents on motorways due to fog. The drivers were probably not exceeding 70mph?, but travelling to close together. Education and reasoning is what is needed. Fortunately the odd trafpol I have met (on the hardshoulder) have put this point across (no points on licence). I have benefitted from their input - it is all about education.
Thats my ten minute rant anyway!!

Don't forget that the BiB don't man these scamera vans or have that much to do with where they are sited etc. It's all down to the Scamera Partnerships and they are all civilians.
This statement is incorrect, the camera partnerships need the support of the Police. The BIB provide RTA stats/manpower/vehicles etc and the roads nominated for speed enforcement have to pass Police checks to ceritify that they are suitable.
I have binned numerous speed site suggestions from Camera partnerships because they are not suitable.
I have also spent the last six months operating a camera van in the Met and I am a Traffic Officer....

Just the person my question was directed at
So when deciding a site did you have a choice?
If so do you pick the spot for the biggest safety impact ‘heading into a built up area’ where someone has not taken account of the changing road conditions.
Or the most likely spot to collect people speeding on the fringe of a 30 limit heading out of town ‘the two trees and hedge’ scenario?
If it is your choice what is the reasoning?
If it was someone else’s who decides and why?
