What's the best way to tie a rope to a branch to make a rope swing?

Tried a slip knot, seemed ok at first, then failed hilariously when the wife tried it (she's not a unit either).

The tree is an oak, the branch is about 25 cm thick, and about 6 m high.

Any PH boy scouts out there?

If you're using decent rope, wrap in around the branch a good few times and tie it ontop of the rope, also if you leave a good lengh, put a knot in it after you have tied it, if it slips the knot will stop it from totally coming apart.

Hmm, you would have thought the name might have given away the likelihood of the knot holding.

You could try a clove hitch tied onto the rope itself. That should slip up the rope but not untie.
Actually better than that is a small bowline tied around the rope. The bowline will become part of the rope going around the branch but it will hold.

I have no idea what it's called...but find the middle of the rope. Throw it up and around the tree branch so you have four pieces of rope hanging down (two pieces form the loop, the other two are the ends).
Feed the ends of the rope through the loop and pull them.
The loop will stop on the branch and form a strong hold.
Tie a knot under the swing seat to secure.

^^^ What he said.

Or a good old fashioned bowline will hold forever.
