My misses wants to take my two sons out to forage for sweet chestnuts. However having not done this before she isn't sure what to look for and where to look. We live in Ruislip Middlesex. Can anyone help.

The sweet chestnuts on the trees round by me this year are tiny and pretty scarce. They are still as prickly sharp as ever though! Conkers were the same. Sweet chestnut trees are pretty unmistakable if you go out looking for them.

They should all be dropping off the trees as we speak. I grabbed a couple of handfuls in about 10 mins of foraging in Braknell Forest at the weekend and cooked them on the log fire on Sunday night. The UK nuts are smaller than you get in yeh shops, but still tasty!

This time of year you should be able to find a sweet chesnut tree by the spiny shells and nuts around its base. (see pic above) You should find them in a great deal of woodland that has been been replanted and managed by man over the years.
