Most 911s pump out a puff of smoke on starting- even brand new £100k 996's, simply coz with horizontally opposed engines a tiny bit of oil the oil cannot drain away like in a conventional engine. So it is burnt up on start up.
What is your oil consumption like? & what miles have you done? A very rough rule of thumb is that by 100k miles most (but not all, ie 993s last longer) of the aircooled engines will need a top end rebuild anyway, as they will be consuming oil & down on power.
I would check cylinder leakage & compressions.
