If you decide to have sex on the beach in Dubai or act indecently, then you are a total pillock and deserve what gets thrown at you!

WTF were these idiots expecting!! Frankly, I think they got off lightly.....typical Brits abroad. They act like animals thinking they own the place.

They didn't get what they deserved - they got far less than they deserved (and far less than that would have got in the UK for having sex in public, continuing after a caution and assaulting and abusing a police officer).

At least they will now be banned from returning here for life and hopefully the resultant publicity will deter their sort (who seem to be turning up here in droves) from coming here.

I think the authoroteees were more than lenient. Very diplomatic indeed. I'm sure the next drunken tryst won't receive the same tolerance.

...and i knew exactly what you were typing about just from the title!!

Got their just deserts, really.

You don't go to a foreign country and break their laws.

Bit like all that controvesy about the homosexual couple who were hung in the middle-east for being gay and getting caught; sure it's acceptable over here, but not there - We might think it barbaric but it's the law.

You have a point - but how far does it extend? Do we ignore atrocities in Zimbabwe, Iraq, etc. as being "their laws"? Should we have ignored Hitler as he persecuted Germans under their law?

This ruling sits rather uncomfortably with me. Yes, they were stupid, but 3 months in gaol?

I might agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that they'd already been warned about it.

No, not all Brits working here are like this. Some of us are fine, upstandingmembers of the community that respect laws and customs.

It really p!sses me off when people try to tar us all with the same brush.

Yes, my parents live in Dubai, but you find the majority of expats are a very civilised bunch of people, respecting local laws and customs. (There are exceptions of course).

Tourists however tend to be embarrassing to be around and this isn't just in Dubai. British tourists are generally a disgusting, foul mouthed crowd to be around and I avoid them with the plague and never say I'm British, (quite handy since I'm only half British through my parents! wink)

I'm not saying all British are like this, but I've met such bad examples of the home crowd abroad in Dubai, Bulgaria, here in Vienna where I live and in other places that it's definitely a majority.

The way I see it... If things get too extreme in a country, the EU & US jump in and start shooting the place up. So unless that's happening, countries are within their rights to exercise their own laws. It's not like they're hidden; people only have a problem with them once they're exercised, like a bizarre case of "oh no he didn't" - Yep, they did, and it's been written for yeeeeeeeeears that it would happen, so quit whinin' and get your head in the noose!

Sorry, missed that. They were very, very stupid. Although I still think it's been a bit harsh...

I disagree. If you decide to visit a foreign country, you must follow their customs and laws. Period.

If you are uncomfortable with them, the solution is very simple. Don't go.

However coming back to the punishment; I think it was very lenient for Dubai and I think they got off lightly as a warning to others thinking of trying the same.
