On my nice fresh walk to work this morning I see a van pull out from a housing estate up to a junction for a main road.

Windows were steamed up to buggery, I could hardly see him through the front window. As I walk past the side window, blokes got a steaming cup of coffee in one hand, not a fancie keepy warm sealed job he can put down. But a cup like you'd have at home.

The other hand is on the wheel. He doesn't indicate and pulls away, I then hear him change a cog (so its a manual then).

How the bloody hell does he think he can drive a manual only using one hand. As soon as he needs to change gear, he's going to have no hands on the wheel. He's just about to drive thorough our town high street, past 2 schools at 8am!

Why isn't hold a coffee whilst driving illegal? Surly that's as dangerous as being on the phone?

When you say "van" you don't mean a red Discovery, do you? hehe

I believe drinking a brew from a mug while driving is indeed illegal, and if caught would result in at least three points and a fine.

Of course its illegal.
What a bizarre question.
Just because no law spe.cifically mentions drinking a mug of coffee whilst driving a manual steamed up van.
To my knowledge no law mentions gluing your testicles to the breaks and changing gear with your arse whilst using your eye to steer-but I am airly sure that, too, is illegal.

Ok, I didnt specifically mean "section 241 states that drinking a coffee whilst driving shall result in up to a maximum 3 points and £200 fine"

It was more of a general wondering if something like this would be covered under a law somewhere, which i'm sure it would be.

Afraid not. But ironically I think it is a wheelchair companys van. Ironic that I'd like to put him in one. "Funny you've got 2 broken legs, I've seen a van that sells them about somewhere"

I think you'll find that, if the rozzers want to push the point and depending on circumstances, it is illegal.

Reminds me of a time when I had one of those builders tipper trucks driving right up my arse end (you know the ones: 3 blokes in donkey jackets and wooly burglar hats sat in front, numerous copies of Daily Sport down front of windscreen, traffic cone on one tipper stanchion, broom on the other, wheelbarrow in back (later found lying in fast lane of M6) and an Ingersoll-Rand compressor with one flat tyre and no light board being towed behind).

Anyroadup, said wagon is driving about 2 inches off my bumper and he's drinking a cup of coffee. On with the brake lights! Desired result: coffee all over windscreen - job done.

Yes it is illegal, as mentioned several times above, as is eating a sandwich, and apple, or using your hand for anything else other than driving the car. Masturbating for example, illegal.

OK, so for arguments sake you go to a drive through McDonalds, and get a cup of coffee and a muffin, then get on the motorway, put the car in cruise @ 70, then start to sip your coffee.

Is that still "illegal"?

I am guessing on it's own not, but if you were involved in an accident, then the bib could justly use it if they wanted to?

No argument its illegal. Your hands, whilst driving, are to be used for driving thr car.

It is illegal but what are the chances of a policeman being around to notice. Due to the lack of police out and about in general it is easy to get away with so many things as long as you keep below the speed limit and the car is taxed and insured so it doesn't get flagged up on thier computers.

How many people do you see each day using thier mobile phones whilst driving? How many actually get caught?
