Hi Guys, I am looking to buy an Ultima. I was talking to a friend who builds f3 racers about them yesterday. He said he doesn't like them ( each to his own, his opinion is based on race cars I assume), that they leak like a sieve ( not seen this anywhere) and that the chassis can crack when raced ( something about ProSport LM3000). He has scared the sh*t out of me really, wish I'd never asked! I have read various pages of this forum and can't see any reference to these problems. Guys?

2 things - cobblers, and cobblers.

They'll only leak if you don't fit the doors and seal the interior properly - as with any car.

Chassis cracking? Have never heard any such thing and if you've seen a chassis in the metal, it's a bloody strong bit of kit.

Tell your mate to stick to F3. Comparing the two are like chalk and cheese.

Not to Repeat Stig words, but have on many Occasion driven mine in the rain (in hard rain was it's first shackdown run) have never had any water on the inside "leak" in, and chassis cracking, he must not have seen the weld quality that thepresent cars have, it is the best I've seen in any Kit. You pay for a Quality product, and trust me it is.

Want prof please come round and I will show you my car gladly, you can sit in it while I High pressure hose it any where you want.

Sorry your mate my have had a bad experience with a MK1 that was Lee Noble first few cars, as they where raced alot, but Ted Marlow is very fussy about his chassis welding just ask him.

Test rides Free..

Thanks Guys, reassurance very much appreciated. As you rightly say, it was probably an early car/s. It would also seem the body has come on leaps and bounds with the GTR/Can-am. I think I should just get it and change his mind ;-)

I'm going to be testing Clive's spare panel set soon Don't worry Clive, I haven't forgotten Just painting the garage and getting my nibbler arranged

Re the leaks, this is because the RACE ultimas don't have door seals. I asked master motorsport whether the driver gets wet, and they laughed. So yes, if you miss out the seals because it's a race car, of course it leaks. Like if you miss out the washer in a tap!

Whilst on the topic of race cars, yes, the chassis can be strengthened for the forces of racing, where there's kerbhopping and slicks, the possibility of an immense crash etc. They do strengthen the chassis up even more, but that doesn't mean it is inadequate for a supercar - just not as strong as some teams engineer their race cars to.

Another mod the race team makes is to go for longer wishbones at the rear. Again, there is some technical reason but they said the road car arrangement with the correct shocks and springs will be fine for what it's been designed for.

I think you can modify anything, and maybe Ultimas can be improved in certain areas, but there is nothing much wrong with them at the moment - so don't worry about your mate's comments.

Anything can be improved. It's all comes down to cost/benefit.

There is nothing on an Ultima that isn't of more than good enough quality for what it's designed for. However, if you're going to be entering it in the Le Mans 24H, you'll want to make some mods to make it last. You could do the same mods on a road car, but it would cost you a fortune, and it wouldn't make a damned bit of difference.
