Don't import one yourself, get yourself a nice one that's already been imported and well looked after, saving yourself a lot of hassle and unexpected cost.

Heavily modified stuff, you wont know whats been done/ driven.
Stick to high grade imports.
Watch the syncro on the gear box, these are weak. Of course you wont be able to check that if you do import yourself. Now is not a good time to import as the yen is too strong against the pound.
If you buy in the UK watch out for overpriced examples. Some people vastly over value them, hence they hang around for sale for ages.

also, be sure to drive one and compare the experience to, say, a Mini Cooper S or Clio 182.

I wouldnt compare it to these.
The Mini is far better built and cost a lot more, the Renno is French not turbo'd but handles better.
A Standard Glanza grips but has a lot of body roll.
Compare it to old school stuff like a Diahatsu Charade GTti, Renault 5 turbo, Polo G40.
