I should have canvassed opinion with those in the know on here before making my purchase, but the other day I bought the 'Matrix' barrage pack from these people.

Along with a few rockets, sparklers and home-made pasties (and foaming pints of nut brown ale) I'm hoping this will be a fun night for us and some friends.

Any recommendations for good fireworks? Online especially?

These are 2 of the best online ones I have used. Lots of the items have video for you to have a look at what they do (insert ejects stars and bangs jokes here lol).

My advice would be to stay away from the light one fuse type jobbies that cost £100 upwards as they are a rip off. You are better off buying smaller items depending on what effect you want.

Missile of stars has a fantasic noise effect (with the usual pretty stars etc)
Golden Pollocks is quiet but pretty
Thunder War is very loud, with not much in the way of pretty effects.

if you want some really good advice and recommendations, get yourself along to this site, they are a friendly bunch and not as anoraky as one might think smile

Yes. Make sure you get one of the "barrage" types.
Its a box that fires off about 500 shots. A spectacular finale.

If you want a really good finale, try 2 Stampedes lit together (page 4 on firework emporium barrage section) They are the dogs!

I must admit, I don't tend to buy retail/shop/garden fireworks but just looking through those sites I am genuinely amazed at the prices (and not in a good way). Also quite surprised at the size of some of them in light of the postage stamp qualities of an average garden nowadays.

Blimey, I sound like a right fuddy duddy there. Just to clarify, fireworks play a big part in my free time!

Having mine on the 1st, trouble is my garden isn't anywhere near the required 20 meters away from the big fireworks nuts

if you do have a postage stamp size garden then there are still some fireworks that you can legitimately (and somewhat more importantly), safely use.

The Gold selection box from Kimbolten fireworks is a good one, certainly one of the best selection boxes out there.

Also recommend this place http://www.newsboxfireworks.co.uk/ The guy that runs it is very knowledgeable, and is open to throwing in a few freebies if you order a decent amount of stuff

I find rockets are a safe bet strategically aimed between the neighbours houses.

We've been invited to a party that's a 'bring your own rocket' kind of thing.

If you could buy one rocket, which would it be? I'm quite happy to spend whatever's needed for a good one. Maybe one of the barrage things would be a better bet?

Can you be bothered to build/buy and set up a mortar

A mortar being a tube stuck in the ground? I could do that I reckon - a bit of plastic guttering pipe maybe?

Unfortunately, the latest round of regs got rid of all the large rockets I would have recommended to you, like Men Shuns "The Orb". Fantastic rocket.

If you can get them from Morrisons then Black Mambas are very good. If you can find somewhere selling the Golden Lion brand of fireworks then any of theirs are pretty good.

Hamleys used to be great for buying big fireworks - bought a fugging mahoooosive chinese "mortar" there about 15 years ago for a bring-a-firework party - it came with a tube (which had to be dug into the ground) and three "shells". It was by far the most impressive firework by a factor. Almost killed me though - the first shell shot out of the tube instantly and parted my hair as it went past. If i'd been leaning a couple of inches closer, I doubt i'd be still here. Also, I think I also had to throw those boxers away...

Hey, I work in the fireworks display industry and I have to say that if you have 300 quid or more to spend on a display then go professional, fireworks companies are able to get their hands on category 4 fireworks at hugely knocked down prices (think 25% of a shops rrp), and they will be able to put on an electronically detonated display far supirior to anyone running around with a portfire (however fun that may be smile).
