The 50-year-old singer, a known health fanatic, would spend up to four hours a day in the gym before taking her children to Kabbalah religious meetings, according to friends.
Breakfast was low-fat smoothies and suppers would consist of steamed fish and vegetables, while television was regulated because Madonna believed it harmed her children's development, they claim.
One also claimed that Madonna refused to allow sunlight to touch her skin, and used to cover herself in thick moisturising cream worth £500 a pot.
A friend was quoted as saying: "Guy likes to look after himself but doesn't see the harm in having the odd treat."
He also worries that Madonna's attitude about food will be passed on to the children. He doesn't want to see them have an unhealthy relationship with food."
Another said: "The evening meal would consist of steamed fish and seasonal vegetables. If Guy fancied a pie and a pint he would have to nip down to the pub. That sort of stodge was banned from the family home."
The more liberal Mr Ritchie, a director of British gangster films including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, reportedly protested about the strict regime that was imposed on him and the couple's children, Lourdes, 11, Rocco, seven, and David, two, but there was no change.
The singer's quest for eternal youth was also cited as a cause for frustration.
A friend said Madonna is worried about lines of age showing on her face. "She refuses to allow sunlight – even through windows – to touch her skin and drapes herself in linen sheets and towels in order to escape the sun's damaging rays.
"Some nights she'll completely cover herself with thick moisturising creams.
"She'll go through pots and pots worth £500 a pop. And then she climbs into these protective plastic body suits. She sleeps covered in all this gunk and plastic."
In the end, Mr Ritchie gave up trying to influence his wife, who has been in showbusiness for nearly 30 years and has an estimated personal fortune of £275 million.
One insider said: "Guy was fed up to the back teeth with having such a regimented life. He simply couldn't take it any more.
"The relationship became less about passion and more about control."
The decision to divorce was announced in a joint statement on Wednesday, nearly eight years after the couple's lavish wedding at Skibo castle, Scotland, on December 22, 2000.

And how much of that is true I wonder? I'm sure it could hardly have been a normal marriage, but if you're a worldwide star 500 quid on a jar of moisturiser and four hours a day in the gym aren't really that big a deal.
4 hours in the gym and £500 moisturiser doesnt hide the fact that she hasnt had a good tune since the 80s...I'd be inclined to take comments about Madonna made by 'friends' and published by a newspaper with a pinch of salt. Furthermore, if she really does choose to shield her children from the politically-biased, eco-fascist, fear-mongering media then who can blame her? If everyone did the same we wouldn't be a nation of spineless, brainwashed, unquestioning drones who lack the balls to stand up against the bullies that are controlling our lives with apparatus which has been paid for with money raised by taxing us.
