Met Police Camera vans use both Laser and mobile Gatso. In practice we alternate equipment from site to site to improve detection rates.

Further when setting up a mobile speed trap what requirements are there in terms of notification that the trap is located at the site, for example, does a sign need to be shown at the location ? or a distance before the location ?

Will

I have not come across the mobile gatso's before, can you tell any difference from the outside , ie must the gatso be on the outside of the van ?
Am I correct in assuming that when using radar it is less accurate and used for close up work or are they used the same as lasers ??

SPECS is alive and well in Nottingham City centre, and also in Northampton on A43.

Reading scamera vans use LASER, NOT RADAR !!!!!

There are two types of "safety Van".

Radar and Laser.

Radar vans have a mini-gatso setup infront of them, which uses "K band" radar, NOT the old style "Ku band" radar. These are mainly used in an urban setting, eg. A40 in London. The only defence is a radar detector.

Laser vans use Laser guns at 904 nm and the most common gun is the LTI 20.20 Marksman with video. These can be used on motorways on urban roads. The only defence is a laser jammer.

Cheers.

Camera vans must be clearly marked and visible, although the interpretation of marked is wide open.
Mobile Gatso cameras are always situated outside the van, at the front. They are sat on top of a small tripod, and are usually painted yellow, about five metres along you will see a small blue flash unit.
Gatso is accurate, it does however have problems picking out speeding motorists in busy traffic.
Laser does not have this problem, the operator can pick out individual cars/bikes and obtain their speed with relative ease.
Deltaf your reply was most amusing!!!

Pies,
I have never seen that set up before, it looks nothing like the usual type of mobile Gatso. In fact it looks nothing like any type of speed detection equipment used in the Met. !!

In Shropshire the talivans are presently attached to the three Truvelo strips in the road and take a short video of anybody who passes over them in excess of the speed limit. This allows you to take the p*ss by dashing up to the strips hence giving the tw*t operator a moment of joy followed by heavy braking to speed limit minus 20, flick V sign, then acellerate once more to a safe sensible speed. Not that I've done this yet but will probably do so when they become more abundant.

I note they've also added new little parking pads on the safe A5 dual carriageway where there are no strips so they could well soon be using laser.

They've used laser on the A5 for a few years now. After the M54, before the A49 goes up toward Battlefield.
There is a gateway on the left hand side of the road, which can conceal a car or more frequently bikes.
After a "pull", they can go back up the otherside, and there is an access turning to return them to the gateway.

.....I know the above picture is from a Dutch site, but Gatsos were invented in Holland.

Not quite true, the best defence is not to speed in the vicinity.
