I picked one of these up on the cheap yesterday with the advert stating it needed attention to either the injectors or the turbo.

Went to view the car and there was a lot of blue/grey smoke while on idle. Seems to calm down after the engine has been warmed a bit though.

On the drive home, the car would occasionally rev itself while idling in traffic. The tach would rise to 6k and there would be a James Bond style smog screen left behind me before returning to normal.

Also I notice a clatter sometimes when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear which I presume is the turbo. Sounds like it is spinning up until I engage the clutch and it returns to normal. Again a lot of smoke is present upon this clatter.

Car has done 140,000 miles with no present service history on a P plate.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Im thinking something to do with oil maybe which could be causing the smoke etc. Maybe seals on the turbo? Maybe someone had a go at adjusting the fuelling or boost on the turbo and screwed it up.

Cheers guys

p.s. Car seems to be running on its own oil. Any ideas why?

Sounds like the Turbo seal as gone allowing oil into the intercooling trunking on the intake side, and as you have already indicated started running on its own engine oil(not good)dont let things get to out of hand because if things get to bad with the revving up on its own and unless your near the clutch ready to stall the rapidly revving motor it will either throw a rod or suffer valve to piston contact as the engine revs uncontrollably and dont think switching off the ignition will catch it either, not trying to scare you just a heads up wink

Thought as much.

I'm well prepared for whats ahead any. Like I said its already revved itself to 6k+ twice for a good few seconds. Startled me the first time but I dealt with it, just thankful the gf wasn't driving at the time.

Cheers

Before wrighting off the turbo, remove the intercooler wash it out with parifin or somthing like that, not petrol, then id tip half a litre of brake cleaner in swill that round let it dry out for half an hour re-fit and road test it,wont cost much may not cure it.

Right it seems I was wrong.

The car was run on chip fat prior to me owning it which we believe has clogged the fuel injectors and maybe the diesel pump too.

Car seems to use a lot of fuel too so I'm going to have a look at getting the injectord cleaned.

Before you clean the injectors try atf-mineral- run the inlet and outlet pipes from the pump to about a litre of it and rev it a bit, change all the filters and see if you can access the fuel tank and clearn that out.

it,s the turbo don,t waste your time and don,t run it again till you,ve had it refurbed or there is more than agood chance you,ll blow the engine.

Sounds like Turbo, not uncommon, Not the nicest of jobs to change either! make sure you dont let it "run away" on the oil, it will rev up until it blows, or if your driving along... soon as it does it pull over safely, 3rd or 4th gear foot on brake and let go of the clutch, Personally i wouldnt be driving it

I have also noticed there is an oil leak. Cannot get underneath the car to see where its coming from. Maybe too much oil? (Oil level above max indicator).

If its massively overfilled with oil this may be your problem, but then why was it overfilled?

Right.

Car has a lucas fuel pump and the previous owner ran it on veg oil. Needs a new pump. Hoping its not injectors too.
