but door is firmly shut? were do i start looking?

If you remove the stainless steel cover plate (when door is open) (3 screws) around the striker mechanism, you'll see at the back of the door catch there is a microswitch that detects if the door is closed...try manually pushing the arm on the microswitch and see what happens
