Thinking of going for a bit of a drive from Guildford towards Goodwood (or south downs in general), but struggling to find a decent pub for lunch.

The only one I know of, and I've been too many times is the Earl of March in Lavant. Really want somewhere at the end of some nice lanes so I can have a bit of a hoon on the way there!

Any suggestions?

Nowhere near as good as it was, but when you get to Goodwood turn round and head back through Petworth into Chiddingfold for The Crown.
Majestic drive and that pub is still one of my favourite places on earth.

Try The Badgers between Petworth and Goodwood on LHS heading from P to G. Great food but you will need to book if a weekend. No kids under 14 from memory.

Ah yes, been there before a couple of years back and remember it being good, thanks for the reminder!

Failing that the Royal Oak sounds promising, so at least I have a plan B.

Not been to the Crown in Chid since it's been re-done, it's only 10 minutes down the road for me though so not really a 'hoon'. Personally I'm not a great fan of the road between Chid and Petworth anyway - all the speed limits have been reduced in the last year or so, and it's usually too busy to overtake rage

Noah's Ark Lurgashall, great food and lovely setting. Had dinner there tonight and was spot on. Might have to book though for Sunday lunch.

Another vote for the Fox. Great setting and the grub's not bad....though seems to be getting a little pricey these days.

Selsey Arms - West Dean (simple, but wholesome)

Worth checking out the cafe bar at the Goodwood Hotel (formerly the Marriot)

Plus, slightly further afield:

Crab and Lobster - Sidlesham

serious grub at: Crouchers near Donington/Birdham

Michelin star food at 36 On The Quay, Emsworth

And also The Holly Tree in Walberton. Absolutely first class food all made in their kitchens - no Brake Brothers there - and very reasonably priced.

Top tip - book before you go, apparently they'd been booked out for weeks!!!

Earl of March thankfully wasn't so busy...
