I'm thinking of picking one up.. are the 2003s clear of timing chain and transmission issues?

Thanks!

Yes and no. Tensioners are metal bodied so unlikely to fail prematurely. I would still advise changing every 100K miles if yopu don't want them to be the death of the engine. Gaerbox, known for the lurch in some cases. Require maintenance no matter what Jaguar tell you wink Sealed for life is true but is it the life you expect ? Routine work like water pump , thermostat, diff oil all show benefits.

Thanks for that. Used to be heavy in Jags in the trade but been a few years, only S-Types I ever dealt with were 00/01s and they were.. ahh... troublesome.

I've heard the 03 and newer cars are no worse than anything comparable. My experiences with X308s have sworn me off of them and X300s are nearly impossible to find in nice shape these days.

Jaguar 4.2 engines have never had an issue with timing chains or tensioners

I noticed that. It looks like a real beauty. Does it not hurt you to part with something like that?

If I'm to be a bit pernickety, the photos aren't great, a bit small and fuzzy, but it still looks like the dream S-Type from heaven. Is that a fair impression or are there any catches?

Er, my '04 XJR developed a tapping noise which turned out to be tensioners which were then replaced (under warranty). That was at 3 years old with not a high mileage. I think that it does no harm to keep an eye on them. Like anything, it pays to maintain cars.

Jesus, I didn't realise they were such good value, makes the wife wanting an £18,500 FR-V look a little daft.

I think this is exceptional. All the same £185,000 for an FR-V is truly insane.

Scott,

Beautiful car, perfect colour, just RHD and 3,700 miles away. I'm looking for an 03-04 for around $14-16k to use as a daily beater. Do love that colour though, lovely car.

If anyone doesn't know, the S-Type is one of the most delightful cars on the road to drive. It is uncannily smooth and silent when you want it to be, but it grips and it handles, and even my 3 litre turns into a tiger almost telepathically when you want it. With the R engine, it is perfect.

If I am careful I will get around 27 mpg trip average, on a long motorway journey 28-30. If I am driving a bit harder, it will drop. These are figures off the car computer incidentally.

Maybe not brilliant consumption figures, but it enhances my life so who cares if it costs a few pounds, and that's all it is.
