Gave up trying to flush the clutch fluid today and just sucked the master tank clean and re-filled with new. Since that was a failure I thought Id have a look at the reported rusty AC pipes at the front... sure enough, rusty as hell but only surface so cleaned up and waxoiled them all now. Next I thought lets have a look for that back hose that rubs the block... sure enough, rubbed through the outer sleeve but luckally mine is not that tight so not rubbed the hose really, filed the corner smooth and then tie wraped some rubbed sheet in the offending area to stop it re-occuring! so all in all not a total failure today.

is the a/c pipe one that runs horizontal low across the front of the radiator? noticed a rusty pipe there when i was cleaning the ro on saturday.
and is it detrimental ie likely to fail at some point soon?

The A/C pipes cost shed loads to replace - at least cash that can be spent on mods instead.

The AC pipes dont corrode, they are aluminium. On the 04 cars they can rub on the bottom rad hose jubilee clips which then wears away the air con pipe.

The pipes that corrode are the Power steering pipes. There are 3 on the subframe + the PAS cooler in front of the rad. These rust - a lot!

We keep all of the above in stock if you need them.

And I am so lucky that I have replaced both

No, thats the PAS cooler. It will fail at some point, but without seeing it its difficult to say, might be next week, might be 5 years time, might be more!
