Faking it - Sickies
Discussion
We've all needed to do it at some point - so cards on the table, let's have the discussion.
You phone your boss and tell him you have a headache or you've been vomiting all night - but you sound fine, and you know he doesn't believe you.
What I...er, I mean you need, is something to make you SOUND rough and unwell on the phone, but doesn't actually MAKE you ill (which might hinder your day off).
How can this be achieved?
The only thing I can think of is shouting or singing as loud as possible until you almost loose your voice!
Any others?
(no, I'm not at home on a sickie today)

I haven't had a permanent job for a while but i stopped bothering with putting on 'a sick voice' when i was about twenty.
Just be forthright.
"I am just letting you know there is no chance i can go more than ten yards from a toilet at the moment, i will let you know if my situation improves later.."

Cotton wool to block your nose, ears (so you get more feedback), and wads of it between your cheeks (the ones on your face) and teeth so you can't move your mouth/tongue much.
Other than that, you could always get the other half to lightly garotte you (in a playful manner of course) the night before to give you a sore pharynx & larynx thus causing you to croak a little.
Unfortunately as a contractor, I don't get paid for sick days, so only take them when I'm the subject of a government health warning.

I know a chap who has had several grannies, uncles, aunts etc that have died or have been suddenly taken into hospital.
As the management team is constantly changing so he resurrect another elderly relative to fall ill again.
That way he don't need to pretend he is sick and he can be seen out and about with no questions.

As an employer I find it pathetic and embarrassingly obvious when people put on a stupid voice to phone in for a sickie.
How many illnesses effect your voicebox?
I instantly lose any respect for someone who does this.
Me too. I'd have more respect for the malingering gobsHow many illnesses effect your voicebox?

I've never 'pulled a sickie'.
In the last 8 years i've had one day off ill, and that was due to a migraine so bad I had to go to the doctors (by taxi - ouch!) for an injection.
Is that because you don't get sick or because you "soldier on"?In the last 8 years i've had one day off ill, and that was due to a migraine so bad I had to go to the doctors (by taxi - ouch!) for an injection.

Me neither. I have rolled into work looking (and feeling) like actual death from too much beer. But I donàt think I've taken the day off for self-inflicted badness. In the last 8 years i've had one day off ill, and that was due to a migraine so bad I had to go to the doctors (by taxi - ouch!) for an injection.

Some genuinely suffer with extreme bouts of physical stomach pain (and the s

ts as it was so pleasantly put). In my case it's called IBS and I really wouldn't want to be at work whilst I am suffering with it (or indeed anywhere more than a few yards from the can)!Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
