I was goofing around on FlightAware.. and... looky here, a B-17 cruising along of all things!

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N390TH

Should be in the air until roughly 19:30 GMT from the looks of it.

Thats pretty nuts! Would love to see one flying. Cool that that site shows you those kinds of flights.

Turned round in the office all excoted to tell everyone, then realised i was the only plane geek here, so i'd just get a wall of silence in response......

What's cooler is that it's running IFR smile

They aren't THAT rare in the skies, usually a couple doing airtour circuits over here in the summer, but that's the first one I ever caught on FA.

Anyone else do a check on any locally flying Zeros or 109s in the air?

That's a great site. It's a shame that the only live flights you can track on a map seem to be US and transatlantic ones.

Has anyone seen a site that shows the position of European/Far east flights.

None that I am aware of track European flights, unless Eurocontrol does something that I'm unaware of.

BTW, I just realized which B-17 that was... I saw it during restoration when I lived in Orlando, and that same plane did a trip to Europe this past summer!

That's a very interesting flight to do in a plane with a 1200 or so NM range!

euroboy, do you know of any equipment that would allow one to listen to Heathrow ATC (or other European airports) while sitting in San Francisco, USA?

Nope.
NATS stepped in and used part of the telephony act to prevent the broadcast of it.
That was back in '05.

liveatc.net (Or .com, one of those two).

European? Yes perhaps. British? Nope. There's some wireless act that makes it an offense to listen to ATC, worded something like "It is an offense to listen to any Radio broadcast that's not designed for you to listen to". Or something.

edit: Beaten to it.

What the others said im afraid - its now 'illegal' but a scanner will still let you listen to them locally - they are only 8.33KHz spaced VHF (well thats what we use anyway!)
Not all UK frequencies use 8.33 spacing (yet). wink
Off the top of my head, I can't recall which ones though!

If you want to track European flights live, you need one of these beasties:

http://www.kinetic-avionics.co.uk/sbs-1.php

SBS (ADS) receiver, gives you the hit from any mode S equipped aircraft (thats all flights in the upper airspace), and will essentially give you a slightly poorer image of the exact screen I look at when talking to the aircraft (sans airways overlays etc).
I think 'father ted' on here has the sbs-1.

Airnav also make one called the radar box that you seem to be able to link to others to create a world wide ATC feed. They seem to have a five minute delay on theirs though.

click on this picture to see all the mode s info shown for each flight.
