Or not?

I hear it is, then I hear it isn't. I hear Antarctic ice maybe holding its own, so less evidence is presented from there?

Anyone have any non-propaganda facts (if that's possible)about the current rate of ice melting or forming? smile

I think it does it rather quietly, except when massive chunks fall off.

Ah yes, but I have a superduper hearing aid in both ears, and one up my arse for good measuresmile But back to the point, which is currently happening more, melting or forming?

Well if your hearing aid is superduper enough you ought to be able to hear the glaciers melting from here... unless you have deafened yourself farting.

Nah farting's fine, just the odd pigeon poo from above is more of a prob around here. Did you read about the Alaskan glaciers growth in the link above?

Just to help things along I had a G&T on my birthday in Antarctica with 30,000 year old ice, so partly my fault. Sorry.

Satellite images are showing that the cold spell is helping the sea ice expand in coverage by about 2 million square kilometres, compared to the average winter coverage in the previous three years.

Look here for the facts:
http://nsidc.org/index.html

The Dailytech article quoted the sea ice extent for August, before the end of the melting season. The minimum extent was not reached until some ten days after that article was written.

The only reason that the polar ice caps are melting is because of the polar bears choice of ride:-

Interesting use of 'facts'.

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2008/08/15/arctic-ice-e...

How about those 'facts'?

Whatever 'facts' are exchanged, there is still no cause and effect in sight if anybody is blaming humans. Arctic ice build-up and large-scale ice loss are commonplace over the last few hundred years.

1922

1817
A considerable change of climate inexplicable at present to us must have taken place in the Circumpolar Regions, by which the severity of the cold that has for centuries past enclosed the seas in the high northern latitudes in an impenetrable barrier of ice has been, during the last two years, greatly abated.

2000 square leagues of ice with which the Greenland Seas between the latitudes of 74° and 80°N have been hitherto covered, has in the last two years entirely disappeared.

The floods which have the whole summer inundated all those parts of Germany where rivers have their sources in snowy mountains, afford ample proof that new sources of warmth have been opened

(Royal Society, London. Nov. 20, 1817. Minutes of Council, Vol. 8. pp.149-153)

Meanwhile, Wingham et al recently confirmed the prior findings of Joughin and Tulaczyk regarding Antarctic ice thickening at a rate of 27 billion tonnes per year. Clearly this isn't alarmist so the media and the wetngreens focus on a small peninsula that grew out over the warmer southern ocean, which is calving, naturally.

Watts the point of your article TB? The guy makes some negative comments and then at the end says "Oops I was wrong" Actually: "My apologies to Dr. Meiers and Dr. Serreze, and NSIDC. Their analysis, graphs and conclusions were all absolutely correct. Arctic ice is indeed melting nearly as fast as last year, and this is indeed troubling."

Have you a link to Wingham et al? As in 2007 they had this to say:
"Recent Sea-Level Contributions of the Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets
Andrew Shepherd1 and Duncan Wingham2*

After a century of polar exploration, the past decade of satellite measurements has painted an altogether new picture of how Earth's ice sheets are changing. As global temperatures have risen, so have rates of snowfall, ice melting, and glacier flow. Although the balance between these opposing processes has varied considerably on a regional scale, data show that Antarctica and Greenland are each losing mass overall. Our best estimate of their combined imbalance is about 125 gigatons per year of ice, enough to raise sea level by 0.35 millimeters per year."

http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/315...

And well you're at it how about a link to Joughin and Tulaczyk too (preferably not via Michael Crichton's novel)?

It hasn't been melting during the recent economic turmoil, but now the stock markets seem to be levelling, so I'd imagine it will start melting again soon.
Even more so after the US election is over.
