iDrive and 3G iPhone - unable to pair ?

Sorry if this is a repost.

I've successfully been able to sinc my regular ipod with my idrive via the centre armrest USB port, but cannot for love nor money get the 3G iphone's ipod to show up?

Anyone having similar problems or have any solutions?

p.s. I don't have the phone function enabled in the car, so only want to connect to my iphones ipod function.
