Gentlemen of PH...

I'm going to be popping the question to the OH next year, and out of curiosity would like to know how you done it? (Don't worry I'm not looking for ideas, I know how and when I'm going to do it, and have almost settled on a place)

I'd like some advice on getting my own ring designed, and wondering if anybody else here had done that?

Felt I had to make a new profile for this post, as the OH knows my login name and don't want to give anything away!

Write "will you marry me?" on the bedroom wall, smeared in your own poo. If she doesn't leave you after that, she's a keeper.

biggrin for that!

Don't buy the ring in advance. Mine was very very keen to choose her own.... bought her something cheaper in silver as a makeshift until I'd bought the one she wanted.

Proposed out in key west in madison square at sunset, following a meal at kelly mcgillis' restaurant, which seemed to set the tone nicely.

Typical! I spend ages typing out elaborate correspondance in the X factor verso thread: Not a peep.
"Hey guys -Poo!" Suddenly I'm deserving of the highest comedic accolade: the roffle

Any time guys!biggrin

I asked Mrs Akers-To-Be only last month while on holiday in France. Did the deed after dinner in Besancon, just seemed the right time.

As for getting the ring designed, best place to go if you're in the South East is Hatton Garden, just off Holborn. More jewellers than you can poke a stick at, so the options are endless. Some of them can design the ring to you liking and you can choose the diamond to your liking/budget. Just make sure you go in a few and get a good idea of prices so you're able to negotiate.

I didn't have a ring when I asked, thought it best to let her choose, and we ended up doing as above, It makes the ring much more personal and you'll get extra Kudos from her for being so thoughtful. wink

Don't tamper with your own ring, not for no one.

Nah, what you have to do is get your scuba diving qualification- Best to do it in December in a quarry, when it's snowing. Then fly to California with her and go skiing for a few days. After the skiing go to LA and meet your mate who has a yacht. Get him in on the plan and he'll have a bottle of champagne and an oyster ready. You hide the ring in the oyster and all head off to Catalina Island. When you get there you go diving and bring up the oyster and produce it to her and ask her to marry you.

Oh yes, just one other thing. Make sure there's a slight squall just as you leave the harbour so you can see how she reacts.

If she hangs on the table below deck and screams and cries while your heavily pregnant mate's wife runs around rigging the ship, totally oblivious to any danger, because it's only a little tiny squall, you may then realise she's a totally useless, wimpy bh who's going to be feck all use if things get tough, so you can forget the proposal, sell the ring and buy a nice watch.

well, that's what I did anyway.

I have yet to pop the question but everything is booked ready biggrin

Hired a Bentley Arnage to chauffeur us around on Bonfire night, first stop is the Wheel of Manchester, booked out the VIP pod on that and will pop the question whilst at the top with hopefully fireworks going off all around. The chauffeur will then take us to the other side of Manchester to a restaurant called Grado for a nice romantic meal. If all the timings go to plan there will be an hour or so spair booked in the Bentley to go for a drink somewhere on the way home.

Bought the ring from www.whiteflash.com and it's absolutely perfect!

ETA: Good luck for whatever you have planned as well!

Cheers for the replies so far, with regards to the ring, I'm going to have it, as to me it seems a bit odd to ask the question without one. I'm based in London, so I might take a wander down and have a look around and see what I can afford.

Failing that, i know its a long way away, but there is a very good bespoke jeweler in whitby, does some outstanding work! As for the question, got dowb on one knee at disneyland paris at stroke of midnight 31st dec 1999! She was well pleased!bounce

Bought the ring in advance (you can haggle and should haggle - you get a nicer ring for your budget and if you buy it in advance without you to-be fiance then they can't pressure sell you and you don't look like a skinflint....) ;-)

Proposed on top of mountain whilst skiing in Switzerland with a 360 degree panaroma. Not on one knee but sitting in the snow.

Lots of uber-points. :-)
