I have the need to send some money (around £100) to an individual in China.

Does anyone "in the know" know if banks charge for this kind of thing? We (as a company) deal a lot with the Chinese and often pay them for goods from our US dollar account.

However, as an individual, I dont have a dollar account..... just standard current accounts with HSBC, First Direct and Natwest.

Does Western Union work in China? They just go to the outlet and collect the cash.

Yes the banks charge for this kind of things, thats what they do! I guess you want to send them Rinimbi (CNY) or US dollar?? In any case you need to change your money into whatever currency they want and then send them abroad, they will charge you for the FX and the foreign payment... Not sure about costs to China but it should be somewhere in the region of £20 for a normal transfer (3-4 days), express will cost you more..

Its a business like anything else, they are in there to make money...
