Sorry guys, having been on the forum for a while, I should probably have worked it out, but having read a thread below, I'm wondering...what exactly is trolling?

Thanks

Tim Nicebutdim

P.S. while I'm being thick, is it just me, or does ticking the box for email notification of replies not work for anyone?

As far as I know 'trolling' is pretending to be something you're not whilst in a chatroom. Eg. posting just to provoke a reaction either by posting incorrect info or info that'll wind people up.
I'm sure others will have a better explanation?

Hi mate - a troll is someone who posts something that they may not necessarily believe, but do it anyway to wind people up.

E.g. coming on here and saying Chimaera's are driven by golf-playing hairdressers.

It's when someone states an obviously upsetting comment on a message board with the apparent purpose of luring other people into posting inflammatory responses.

Oh, and it's just you

Thanks y'all, now feeling less thick.

Annoying re: email replies to post not working - I ticked the box on this one, but no 'bing-bong' from my PC?

Any moderators out there who can fix this?

The system does work, but often falls found of spam traps, particularly with Hotmail accounts. Are you trying to pick up your mail via Hotmail?

"Trolling" is a corruption of "trawling" (for a response to an inflammatory posting). How sad and pathetic are people who do that?

Who's pathetic, the respondant, or troll?

Some trolls can be quite sophisticated and/or entertaining.

No it isn't. "Trolling" is a fishing technique where you drag a lure behind a boat to see what bites. By extension, it has come to mean the posting of inflammatory material (the term originates on Usenet and predates the web) to see who bites. A punning extension of that is that the person who trolls must be a troll, and therefore lives under a bridge.

The full definition is in the Jargon File, here;

I find them easy to spot, if they look like this then they are a troll.

I also don't get the emails but that may be because I use a machine far superior to your usual Microsoft piece of kit, namely an Apple Mac!!!

Oh and I thought the Trolling thing was something one of my mates does on Satuday nights because he always ends up with one!
