As you may or may not know, I was lucky enough to win the sealed bid auction for the Ride Drive course at this years Growl.

Excellent!

I've just had the second of my two half days and am surprised and impressed by what I've gained from it. I've been driving for almost thirty years and was fairly comfortable with my driving - not the best or fastest but safe enough. Or so I thought. It's amazing how much I'd forgotten, not realised or never known about what is an everyday task which I'd taken for granted.

If any of you have thought about it, get on and do it. Those of you who don't need it - think again. I'd be surprised if there wasn't something you'd gain from the experience.

Thanks to Ride Drive, Griff Growl 08 and my 'tutor', Bob. thumbup

I know what you mean Ian, I had a full day a couple of years ago, its an excellent experience, when you consider that you may not think twice about spending around £300 on an upgrade on your car, when the money may be better invested in the driver.

I bought my Griff coming up for three years ago and one of the first things I did was to arrange for a couple of days with the Ride Drive guys. We spent two days driving around the back roads of Berkshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire plus a couple of hours on the track. First off I was allowed to drive without any comments being made, so that an assessment could be made of my driving style (faults!); over the two days we worked on positioning on the road, anticipation of what other road users are doing, improvement in gear management and braking / cornering. On the track I was encouraged to push the car towards its (my!) limit and experimented with what happens if you brake / change gear at the wrong moment in a corner (thank goodness for large run off areas...). Overall a very valuable experience - it has really given me much more confidence in my driving and (IMHO) improved my driving ability and awareness of the road and other users. I'd highly recommend Ride Drive to anyone, no matter what car they are driving!

Hoov, think of it as an application of good techniques, anticipation, observation, planning.

The instructors will explain what you're doing wrong, why, how to correct it, and show you the improvement. They will also expand on what you're doing right, so you can do more of it!

If you go into the drive wanting to learn, you will learn loads. If you go into it with the "this is how I was taught to drive" attitude, you'll remain at a much lower skill level than you could be.

I've done a half day (which I'd recommend anybody start with, cos you'll be knackered at the end of it), and two full days, one all on road and one with the off-road bit. I'm thinking about a half-day refresher as it's a couple of years since I did them, and I'm sure there's a few edges that need polishing.

Think of it as a performance mod you can take from car to car.

Grover,

I'm really glad you enjoyed it and got a lot out of it. I know I did when I went on my half day with Mo.
