Any ideas of a guidline as to how much of a drama having some diff backlash removed would cause

Presumeably the pinion can be adjusted OK on my 1999 HSV GTS

It's not too bad at the mo, just thought I may look into getting it adjusted out before it does become an issue

Costly / Lengthy job ?

Cheers folks

Normally you would tighten up the lash on the side carriers, but it depends why the lash has developed. Do you know?

Can only be a bearing failure if its out of spec (unless the crownwheel has failed). Is it out of spec?

Either way, we could do this if required. To remove, strip, rebuild and replace all bearings and seals and refit would be circa £850-£900. Word of caution though, if the side carriers are siezed, quite likely on a 99 car then it could be a bit more.

Has this just developed? Or was it like it when you got it? I had a brand new 06 Clubsport R8 and it had stloads of back lash. (Although there was not a lot in the diff itself).

I took it back to the dealer who told me it was within specification. I found out the "they" are all like that??!!

Apparently Holden lovers down under put up with crap like that?

It's always been like it and it wouldn't suprise me to find out that they are all like this

Nothing major but when in traffic you can certainly feel the transmission take up is certainly more than I am used to.

Just don't want to shear of my pinion teeth in a moment of excess throttle. Which has been known.

It sounds like normal then. You just have to get used to it and drive accordingly. I suspect that the problem maybe enhanced by the lsd unwinding as well? The worst I had was the huge clunk 1st to second when just driving lazily round town. You eventually acclimatise and it reduces the problem. Annoying, but what can you do?

Indeed. Dont forget the GTS's are worse than the later monaros because they dont have the second rubber drive coupling, just a U/J instead which allows more noise transmission.
