Hi All,

I know that its been covered before but I'm after a house alarm as one of our neighbours got broken into the other night.

Criteria is:
Ideally I would like a wireless alarm to prevent the need to redecorate.
Our house is 3 stories, ground floor being garage, office and utility whilst 1st and 2nd are living space. Therefore I would like to have at least a dual area set-up.

Now, there seem to be a few products on the market but does anyone rate some above the others? and if so for what reason.

Any advise would be appreciated
Many thanks

Ive fitted 4 Yale systems and found them to be fine(touch wood). Also has PIR and door contact in external garage and that's casued no problems. Two keypads, two live sirens, auto dialler,5 PIR's, 6 door contacts, came in @ £360 IIRC.

Depends if you need to have it rated for insurance purposes?

There are some good wireless ones around, but they tend to be really expensive if you need approval or monitoring.

IMHO if you need / want either of those then its best to stick to a wired solution.

I believe they do, but again I think it might be quite expensive.

Also you should see the wired installation (and I use that last word very loosely) that ADT have done on the place I am buying......cables run along the middle of walls etc.

Thankfully the boys at Banhams are coming along to sort it out soon.

many alarm companies are cowboys, sad fact i'm afraid. Some installs are shocking, just like Sky, BT etc etc.........

Slightly off topic.
Can anyone recommend a good contact in Hampshire to fit CCTV cameras? They need to be hidden in trees and bushes as it is for a plot of land.

parents have a volumetric alarm system, which works fine as long as you close all the windows and doors before you leave, no good for leaving on when you are in the house though. Just a small black box in the hall and a box outside, open a door or window and it goes off.

Some home insurance companies insist the system has to be NACOSS approved if in a high risk area........

Also, be careful if you have pets, cats/dogs etc, although you can specify "pet proof" PIR sensors.....

Got quoted £5-600 for the install + £20 a month for the monitoring (you do get free servicing with that (meaning they come once a year to replace the batteries). Oh and you have to pay a one off subscription fee to be on some kind of register so the police know where you are...

That was for a 3 storey house, with only downstairs monitoring with 3 dog friendly PIRs, 2 door/windows sensors and a personnal alarm in the bedroom for my wife as I travel abroad quite regularly. I nearly threw the salesman out when he started to talk how my wife would get raped to death everytime I go away on business if I didn't pay up... been fine for the last 3 years... and the dogs are fierce enough thangyouverymuch!

I had an ADT alarm fitted and if I remember correctly, they offer you certain packages. i.e If you want more than 5 pir sensors and two door alarms, the price goes up to the next bracket. They will send a company rep around to give you quotes etc.

As for the wireless subject, I had my garage rigged up wireless to the system and it was more money than hard wire. It has worked fine though.

One fault I did find with their system though, if you have it monitored by their people, it's all done via your phone line. Anyone who knows what they are doing can cut your phone lines before they enter the house and ADT will be none the wiser, only the alarm in the house itself will sound. I'm no cat thief yet I found that out and confirmed it with by asking the guy installing the system.

If you have the need and the cash, you could also rig up a cheap DIY cell phone chipped alarm to sms your phone if your house is broken into as back up.

For extra moolah they'll probably offer one that has GSM monitoring as well as landline to prevent this if you're that worried.

Yes, this is pretty standard now. It works out at about £2 per day extra I think.

To be honest, I wouldn't use their monitoring system unless you have some real valuables and can afford it.

I think it's over priced. Get it all intalled and rigged to your phone and a relatives as back up.

ADT laughnono

If your going to get an alarm fitted by a professional, get recommendations for local companies that care for their customers.

From my experience, bar a few, most ADT installs i have seen are shocking to say the least. You have been warned. wink

We charge about £450 which includes 2 services. The customers that have this though are mainly commercial clients where the insurers require it.

Another reason not to fall for the "well it's only £2 a day" bull from a certain large company.

Scooters, one of my best mates owns a home security firm. He's one of the good guys. Genuine, honest and knows his stuff. Did a wireless install for me.

Based in Cardiff but tends to work anywhere in the southern half of the country.

Let me know if you're interested

My neighbours also have keys and will telephone me the instant it triggers. He's also a mad old sea faring retired bugger who'd probably clear the building with a machete or similar before I got there anyway. Tidy.

I have fitted 100 Yale alarms systems ranging from a basic system with a siren , 2 x pir , 2 x door contacts and a remote keypad fully fitted for only £160.
I also do the telecommunicating alarm allowing arming and disarming by mobile and alarm/smoke alarm activation to your mobile.
Out of over 100 systems fitted I have had only one equipment fail which was a siren that Yale replaced without any querries.
There are obviously no charges or monitoring fees for the alarms. I only charge £30 plus any battery replacements for a yearly check.
I have been totally impressed with their versatility and reliability.
It depends what you need though. If your insurance require Nacos or siaa then you will have to pay much more.

I have had 100% customer satisfaction and only minor problems mostly to do with positioning of pet friendly sensors..those damm cats jump everywhere..

A typical telecomm system from me would be 1 x siren, 1 x dummy box , 2 x pir , 2 x door contact. 1 x telecommunicating control panel. all fully fitted for only £275.
extra pir's are £29.99 and ungrading pir's to pet friendly is just £7 extra per sensor.

I can also add a gsm module that converts incoming and outgoing ptsn to gsm. This is ideal for homes without a phone line or empty properties where the phone is disconnected. This just requires a working sim card. I just put a £10 pay as you go in although you have to make sure you make occasional calls out so your sim doesn't expire. This is done by simply doing a test call out from the control panel.

I did one system for one paranoid guy who wanted a sensor in every room of his five bed three story house. He ended up with a control panel, 13 PIRS yes thirteen. a smoke alarm , siren , keypad controller and two remote keypads and it still came in under £600.

Obviously you could buy the stuff and fit yourself I would give you free tech advice if you had probs although Yale do that anyway and are pretty good although only 9-5.
