Apologies for the numerous car threads, but (as probably everyone is aware) I'll be taking my driving test soon, and have decided to get a Focus Zetec 1.8 as a first car, which will leave me some money to get another motorbike biggrin

Questions:

1) How much Focus would £2000 get me? (Would I get a facelift model?)
2) What's a high mileage for a Focus?
3) What desirable extra options are there?
4) What is this Ford 'Modular build' I keep hearing about? Will I be able to retro-fit upgrades easily?

Thanks smile

1) Look at Autotrader
2) 100,000 miles (IMO)
3) Heated front screen and A/C
4) Modular build means many components are shared, so yes you may be able to retro-fit certain things easily. Most mass produced cars are run on a modular build system.

You might be better off trying the FFOC.

True, but as a model specific forum you'll get better, more direct advice.

focusowners.com will sort you out

my 1.6 run-a-round has done 100,000miles and its fine. there has been a couple things, bearings, cv-joint but thats it really. everything else was modification problems. oh and the clutches go on them easy. weak point. give them any stick and they go.
but mines been sat for a year, got it back on road for cheap driving and loving it.

Got my test next week, so I'm looking at getting one on the drive now (Can't find a decent Celica anywhere, and I imagine a Focus will be cheaper to insure).

As they're all lower insurance groups, engine size isn't much of an issue, so which is the best model to go for? Does this look promising:

Festas have always been in stupidly high insurance groups. The Focus sat in much lower groups than the equivalent Escort due to Ford concentrating on security.

As has been said, get a 1.6 or 1.8 insurance depending. Five doors is preferable come resale time but the 3 door looks better. Climate pack (aircon and heated screen) is the must have options box tick.

Don't skimp on tyres either. With a decent set of boots front and rear these things are ludicrous. Good luck in the hunt.

Thanks, not worth the extra premium for the 2.0 ESP then? Zetec seems to have the best suspension, but I like the idea of having all the Ghia's toys...

Toys like fake plastic wood inside and chromed plastic trim outside?

If you can afford the insurance go for the Zetec. The 2.0 is by all accounts heavier and not much more powerful than the 1.8 (the engine of choice) but the 1600 is far from a crap motor, even if it doesn't like being revved all that much. The latter is supposed to be the pick of the bunch dynamically too due to weight saving up front.

Can't be arsed, it's about the size of a boat and TBH they're all either old or high mileage, I'd rather get the NCB built up and get something smart next year when I'm 25, you PH stalker!

I think the problem you are having is that you don't know what you want mate. Think about what you want out of owning a car, then get something that fits all that. If thats a Focus, fair enough.

Aye, something under 2 grand, that's got a lot of space, reliable and a decent drive...

Been and sat in a 1.8 Zetec now and seems nice enough, 81,000 miles without the climate pack though smile

Saw a Celica as well, and don't like them at all in the flesh! Haha!
