Sorry to raise an old topic, but on checking the Club site and the MGOC V8 site I still can't resolve the problem.
My 400 SE runs superbly (tempting fate!) but the tickover takes too long to drop down when in traffic. I have fitted a new stepper, a new Speedo sensor and all vacuum pipes etc are new and properly harnessed.

It is a hot wire system and runs smoothly right through the rev range regardless of load.

Might have had the same but part of another issue. Mine was down to the throttle pot voltage wrong. The unit had shifted and jumped up somewhat and the engine was fueling all wrong despite running fine on a long run. Sort of. Issues that had no cause did now.
