hi all again, after having a couple of teething probs with my sp6 got it sorted and booked it in for a custom exaust .kieth at clevor trevor (great bloke and very helpful)recomended julian at tcs as i wanted to get it tuned up before it whent in for the exaust so we get the right sound .now tcs is only 20 mins from me and i thought great called up booked it in then got a call the day before it was due in by julian to cancel because he said speed 6's are rubish and that i'd bought the wrong car and basicaly just sged my car off.anyway what i need to know is there anyone in the notts area that specialises in mapping these cars as i am in the process of building a workshop and am planning a body off rebuild but was hoping to do the nurburgring once more before i take her off the road

Zed

J is renowed as a AJP specialist and the SP6 know for being a bit fragile.

Problem with any tuner tuning any car is that people go an break them after tuning and blame the tuner.
So if you have a fragile motor to start with it's probably more agro than it's worth to try and help you break them quicker.

It happens a lot I have heard.

Not in you area, by Racing Green can sort all the SP6 problems if that's what you want. There are other tuners around, but RG bucket cam conversion is probably the ultimate soloution. But it will cost!

Good luck

If you don't get enough replies on here, have a look on the "speed six" forum.

Dom at TVR power in Cov knows the speed six well & he's got a RR. Might be worth a chat to him smile

joolz has fallen out of love with the s6 again me thinks. Contact straight8 - doesn't take long to get there from notts.
Joolz is one of the good guys. But he has always turned away s6's away for remap work and in the old days used to turn away the cars for servicing. Think he just gave you the right advice?! ie s6 remap is a waste?

I think this is true in the main. I have not heard of anyone getting much gain from remapping a sp6 unless they have done major work to go with it.

RG buckets the ultimate solution? Only time will tell. There have been so many false dawns with regard to a fix for the sp6 so you can understand why people are sceptical.

To be fair to TCS they are the only people I have heard of trying to seriously race a sp6 recently (and one of the 'fixed' versions at that) so have the best idea of how reliable it is. The others haven't so I personally would take their opinions with a grain of salt.

the car has already had a shed load of cash spent on it including 27k at racing green alone now the car is pretty much bullet proof except for the elctrics ofcoarse ,the first owner spent in total 36grand on moddifications and a further 12 on rutine stuff . the car revvs to 9.5k rpm and i have taken it to 197mph on a gps based speedo so definatly not standard.now the chap i got it off had neglected it as it wouldn't even start the ecu went to safe mode and although i have tuned it to the best i can considering all my equipment is in storage (hence im building a workshop)it still has a slight hesitation when its driven sensibly nothing major .it will be sorted in a couple of months when i take it off the road just needed a tune on a rolling road ,hell i might even buy one. and worst case scenario iam also toying with the idea of an engine swap as i have a supercharged 6.3 litre chevy that i built for my 300zx a year and a half ago and didn,t get round to fitting but i want to keep it together as much as i can, at the end of the day the s6 is only a jumped up vauxaul unit so its not that hard to maintain.thanks for advise i will try tvr power .

WTF !!

the conversation as I remember it was :

you'd bought a SP6 car and called me up to discuss tuning your car to make it "as fast as possible" or something similar. You suggested that you were looking for VERY high hp figures amongst other plans that you had for it ..

now what I said to you (and I stand by this 100% ) is that for that sort of use you have bought the right car but the wrong engine! I suggested you should have done more research beforehand because even just 20 minutes on here will uncover a whole host of high hp SP6 engines that are no more or failed to deliver what was promised. There are other issues with the SP6 v AJP8 like lack of midrange, having to rev the life out of it to make good numbers, etc. In fact I have personally yet to see a SP6 make more than 400hp reliably, or close come to that.

The fact is : at 7k rpm our race SP6 was 30hp shy of the class winning 60,000 mile road car AJP8 engined Cerbera of Mike Saunders, at 5000 rpm it was 100 hp down (!!!) compared to the AJP8. On that basis I absolutely flatly refused to do any work for you because I could see the danger straight away of getting involved with the project because it would need so much to even be equal to an AJP8, at which point you got the hump. You seemed to not understand that I would MUCH rather turn business away than promise to do something I know from experience many people have tried and achieved very variable success rates, you seemed to think I should do the work just because you had asked and you were quite argumentative when I refused - you wouldnt take no for an answer on some points until I had explained myself several times. That's not how it works here - plenty of people will promise you everything and deliver nothing, we've been there, seen it, done it etc etc as customers ourselves. I don't do business like that, but i will tell you why I won't do business like that to justify my position.

I did NOT sg off your car (the SP6 cerb has its place but is the wrong choice for a performance cerb .. the AJP8 is far far far better unless you go for a STR8-Six supercharged engine? ) but i will have pointed out in matter-of-fact terms (and maybe you don't like plain talking but I can't help that) that you have bought the wrong car for your intended usage unless you want to spend a LOT of money making it a reliable high HP producer.

If you want high hp figures go to STR8-six or TVR Power and ask them how much they will require to make your car a reliable genuine 400plus bhp engine, or 500hp or even 600hp if you want that - and i mean reliable and genuine numbers cos it will cost .. those guys can do it but not on a std engine, they would want to build something quite nice for you and that costs money. The most I have ever seen from a normally aspirated engine build that isn't a flash in the pan figure is an installed 380hp on the wilder 3.8 and 290lb.ft .. the sort of numbers that a remapped AJP8 laughs at - no disrespect to the wilder but the SP6 just doesnt make good midrange, its just the way it is. You need more cc or to force the air in to make it a real high hp producer (see the TVR Power 4.3 with nitrous for some BIG numbers, theyve got that working now if youve got the money)

Now I wish you well with your project and I wish whoever takes it on much success and good luck. If you get a high hp reliable engine that will be great because I love engineering excercises and someone somewhere will take it on no doubt, but not me.

I think that's a reasonable and fair appraisal of the situation as I saw it at the time.

Why in the name of all that's Holy would you want to 'get it tuned' when you already had it 'sorted' and it does 197mph and revs to 9500rpm?!?

Too much Project Gotham on the X-Box for you sonny...

Looks like you need to spend a bit more time on your English homework, particularly the spelling...

lol just read the comments about the 9.5K / 197mph etc. Funny how you omitted to mention any of that in our 'phone conversation - who built it and why does no-one in the close-knit TVR world know anything about this monster? are you feeling backed into a corner at all? I'm very glad I turned you away now. Like I say : good luck!
