I have noticed the later models have the twin 3" back box set up not unlike the GTI, i have a 04 GT TDI 140 which has the smooth bumper and hidden tail pipe.

Anybody know how to go about swapping? Is it same system just different box or we talking system changed to get the desired look. Have seen complete systems but seems a bit much just for an astestic change. Also im guessing it has a turn down tail pipe for a reason, will putting a twin straight tail pipe effect the compression/back pressure?

Any info will be a great help.

Cheers

170BHP versions have exposed tail pipes and 140s are hidden per yours.

Purely a styling thing, no impact either way on performance.

Customer wants to get from A to B with minimum fuss and doesn't want to attract attention => hidden tailpipes.

Customer wants to be seem to be moving fast, is proud of his emissions and the size of his pipes => exposed tailpipes.

On the MkIV, swap means a change of back box and valance.

Did check that thinking it would be the 170's with them but some the 140's also has them on 07-08 plates.

I have a MK V, so can i just swap the backbox over from the 170 or newer 140??

Downward pipes are to stop the black soot from damaging your bumper. The later models are low emmisioned with dpf filters and so this will not occur anyway, hence the straight pipes.
