Last night at about 1am, I heard a car pull up outside the house, obligatory chav loud thump, thumping and generic laughing, followed by some suspicious sounds - followed by the car shooting off - before I got the chance to get up to look.

Sounds that I realised were clearly of some sort of air pistol - I went outside to investigate (I wanted to check my car TBH) and my "For sale" sign has holes in it that have been caused by some kind of air/projectile weapon.

Question is - should I have reported this to the police or would I have been wasting my time?

(I really ought to go out and have another check of my car really...)

Go out and buy a much better and more powerful air pistol / rifle, preferably with a super magnification sight or better still a red dot, lazer type thing.

.....then just sit...and wait...

I wouldnt waste my time, even if they managed the catch the low-lifes they will only get a slap on the wirst - and sadly they will most likely be back to finish the job, on the car this time

It would have been well worth reporting if you had a reg number or any sort of description, but with nothing it would be a complete waste of time.
It amazes me how big a 'crime' has to be before the police will even acknowledge it.

Yes, it has to be as big as exceeding the speed limit. That big!

Let me get this straight.

Your property has been shot at? Shot at?
And you think it not worth reporting?

How odd.

I would report it mate. The bobby's will prob do nothing as you have no car reg or discription. Next time they may miss what they're shooting at and hit some innocent in the eye.

Report it. At least for their records. In effect its "gun Crime"

Not saying it's right or for one second defending these idiots, but lets get things into perspective - they were shooting a 'for sale' sign with an airgun. It's hardly crime of the century.

Very juvenile though, something I'd expect from a 15 year old at most.

If you had the reg plate details it would've been worth giving the police a call. If not a call to the non-emergency number might be a good idea to help build a profile.

Report it. Nothing will happen, but it'll be logged as a crime, meaning you're not helping nu labia to report falling crime rates due to people not reporting stuff.

Please don't report it, it won't achieve anything except putting "gun crime" figures up, which our delightful government will use to put extra restrictions on legal shooters. These yobs aren't legal and are obviously young hooligans, but reporting it won't actually achieve anything. If you get a reg no. Or similar to actually pursue them with then please try to get them nailed to the wall by the Police, there is no place for kids running round shooting indiscriminately, but reporting it at this stage will only hurt those who abide by the rules.

Probably better off reporting it to the estate agent and getting them to replace it with a fresh one. Not the sort of thing that is going to endear a prospective buyer!shoot

Report it, if you'd been lucky they might have been shot with a real gun!

You read the daily mail don't you?
You see this as a wild west type out of control gunfight when the average person sees it as teenagers naughtily, but harmlessly shooting a sign with an air pistol.
People like you are why the police haven't got enough time on thier hands.

I'm not saying I shouldn't report it, but given I didn't see the offender, their car nor the weapon - what exactly do I say to the police?

Suspected Gun crime should be reported though. They might have been target practising for something else.

Although I'd have probably just gone back to sleep and taken a look in the morning.

Its just kids messing about so don't waste the police's time. Its probably a load of middle class kiddies daring each other to shoot road signs, which is preferable to a load of rogue, knife wielding, drug dealing gang kids running amok. Time wasted on the middle class kids cocking round with a BB gun or whatever is better spent on the wrong'uns.

He could make it more authentic though by attaching a sign below it reading.

"Population Four Three".
