how do I get the alarm fob thingy open to replace the battery - I eventually got my spare set of keys from the last owner and the spare set have never been used and the battery is either missing or gone flat. I intend to get 2 new key/combined fob thingys from TVRplus - but I need to get the guts out of the old ones - do they just prise apart ? if so where do I insert the screwdriver ??? I dont want to bust it if at all possible....

Just prise it apart. I just use fingernails all round the edge, a little at a time.

You could try The Small Battery Company or 7 Day Shop.

Halfords stock them! I can give you the part number later, I have a couple of spares at home.

As requested the make is VARTA the number is CR1220 and you'll need two per fob, in my case anyway.

Just to say be careful when you refit the batteries and sometimes you may need a tiny piece or stiff card etc if the plastic push area is stressed to make it work better.

Another thing worth mentioning is that if you blipper doesn't owrk and you are stranded, split the remote open and part the batteries rub them clean and replace them, as they work on a very small amp rating this usaully gets them going in the shorterm.

2 x CR1220 from The Small Battery Company = £3.00 including P&P.

in another thread someone mentioned resetting the alarm/fob if you take out the batteries as it will lose it's memory...whats all that about ? ? ?

Hi Snorky, I had to replace the battery a while ago, and I did not have to reset anything. Prised it open, replaced the battery and the little bit of card (so it works first time), shut the fob, and Presto! A functioning key fob. I have a P-reg Chimaera, with the little black fob thingy from Meta. Never heard of having to reset it......

thanks for that RiverGirl - will try it when they arrive - tomorrow according to the email. Did you ever manage to sell Ruby ?? Rob looked at it for me when I was buying in July - said it was immaculate, drove very nicely and was the quietest ( wind noise wise ) Chim he'd ever been in - unfortunately ( for you )we found another younger, cheaper facelifted one at the time and it was Blue - the colour I preferred...Snorky

Hi Snorky...good luck with the fob. Ruby is still for sale. Seems everyone wants blue! Rob is right, she is stunning, so no lies told there!

Did the fob work any better once you had new batteries in it? I accept that none of them are going to work from 20 yards but for the sake of a couple of quid even a maginal improvement would be something.

I am currently using the 2nd set. The first set, um, melted. I had put them in the oven, in the casserole dish(where it lives)and out of reach of thieves. Phillip comes home and decides to cook dinner, involving a frozen pie. He'd forgotten about the keys. I come home (I'd taken the Golf)...see oven pre-heating and scream. Sure enough, a black melted mass, with some key bits sticking out. Even the silver Chimaera name on the key chain had turned bronze-colour Anyway, the 2nd set works, but I have to use the heel of my thumb and point it at the rear-view mirror. I figure it's all part of the car's inherent charm!!!!

Edited to properly answer aaandy's question: yes, it did work better
