I had my major annual service last week, plus tappets. A few niggles identified and resolved and fixed etc. etc. However when I picked it up Austec told me that the clutch they fitted several months back was not up to scratch, and they wanted to revisit it . (I had noticed that the gear change was a bh, but had got used to it). Anyhow they took it back in and courteously fitted me a nice new clutch. Gear selection is no soooo much better. What service!

Thanks boys...and Ann of course

I'm curious as the guys know a fair bit about the speed6, they build enough of them and lets be honest nobody turns down potential major work. Anyway I'm Glad you are getting it sorted which is the main thing.
Did you address the non cat problem first and then found it was something else, or was it a blind diagnostic by the 2nd party and more importantly is it now sorted confused

Well - sounds like it's getting more reliable.

It's been away from Austec for what .. 2 months.

That's not bad biggrin

Sorry, Peter, but what is so special about this?

You have paid for a clutch to be fitted, which would have come with a minimum of a years warranty from whichever company supplied it. All Austec or any other garage would do in this situation is send the old part back with an claim for the labour.
Courtesy does not come into it rolleyes

Now if they had re-imbursed you for the original fitment then that would have been exceptional service wink

Actually rev, I blame it on me opening my big fat mouth! I mentioned on a thread about a month ago that since Christmas the car has cost me virtually nothing this year (in repairs at least). Bloody car must have access to a PC and thought "right, I'll show him!" hehe

Clutch, diff seals, rear wishbone (apparantly the source of my funny noise from the rear) and a service. Ho hum.

Are you going for a standard or heavy duty clutch Fubes?

Just wandering with the extra hp you have now whether that has resulted in the standard clutch wearing out.

Err, dunno. Replacing whatever was in there. How would 20hp more wear the clutch quicker? Surely its the application of the clutch that would wear it out, not the hp going through it? confused

To be fair, this clutch has lasted nearly 30k miles (make that sound like a good thing rofl) so cant complain as the one before that lasted 3k miles yikes

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

rev, as I have already eaten humble pie on here for being beaten by BCA's Dad (eg NOT Ben wink), his superior knowledge/launch/pilot skill did me, not the power.

And may I add, UNTIL you have retrieved your testicles from Mrs Rev's handbag and put them back on, and do the Speed Trials yourself next year, you are in no position to take the piss on this point.

Until you retrieve/grow your own swinging sack, you are always welcome as my spannerman wink

Well Fubes, think of a clutch friction plate like a brake pad i.e one makes you go the other makes you stop. Just as a pad relies on gripping onto the disc to slow you down the clutch plate relies on gripping to the flywheel face to make you go.

So, just as in pads there are different grades of material there are in clutch plates material depending upon how much power you are trying to put through them. This is why you see the mention of kevlar & ceramic compounds now being used in clutch applications.

As is well documented on PH the average 'standard' 4.5AJP produces 350-360bhp....with yours producing a recorded 420bhp it is up by 60-70bhp clap so therefore it may wear the clutch quicker as the clutch plate material may be struggling to cope.
The clutch manufactures usually build in a theoretical failure percentage over the stated specification so you may be ok.

Agreed if the clutch is not used correctly i.e riding the clutch then it would wear a lot quicker.

Bearing in mind you have said you are planning to do more motorsport next year it may be worth considering upgrading as the last thing you would want is to sit on the Speed Trials start line with the clutch plate material shredding furious
