Got a tidy every day watch, but won't take it hiking/camping/etc 'cos it's too nice.

My current timex expedition has just died and I can spend maybe £100-ish on a nicer replacement.

I have pretty much zero idea what's available at the mo, so please suggest away!

Must:
be waterproof (swimmming sort of waterproof - I fall out of canoes but I don't dive!)
have a night light
have an alarm
take the odd knock

stopwatch, altimeters, compasses, bells and whistles all could be nice.

Thanks in advance smile

G-Shock. And there are some very cool ones out there. Plus what you save on something else, means you can buy a dress watch! (Casio and Werners Flying watches - in under £150)
You know it makes sense...

Aww, go on...

Go for a basic G-shock, i have one which does all of the above (what you have listed is what i am referring to as basic) and it is tough as nails.

which is the better watch - that timex or the mudman?

the mudman looks more rugged and durable, but is a bit bigger.

Find myself mysteriously drawn to the Gulfman... although I have no need to know what the tide is like and I find looking up at the sky to be the best way of telling what phase the moon is in smile

Last time I owned a Casio I was still at school, and I reversed the polarised sheet to get white-on-black display (to match my Casio calculator, natch smile )

No idea, tbh. A watch might look more rugged but in fact be more flimsy. Only way is to try them in the field. Or mountain. biggrin

I'd bet a pint that the Mudman would take more abuse than the Ironman.

G-Shock or Suunto. Out of those - Suunto for me, get the model that suits what you want it for and you won't look back. Vector or x-lander models are good general ones. I think they've some new come out models lately - oh, yes, here they are...

I've just been looking at these. Core All Black looks nice but I prefer the strap on the Black Orange. Hmm decisions ...

Found this earlier:

yes
Mudman is the tougher I would bet on it. In a moment of bordem (and a bet) I put mine in a bowl of water and froze the bugger for 2 days...

...no effect on the watch.

Before that I wore it paintballing and took a shot direct to the face a close range... again, no effect what so ever. Cleaned it after paintball by just chucking it in a bowl of water and leaving it to soak over night.

Tougher than a tough thing from toughsville.

I had a good look at an Ironman in a shop and the first impression I got was not good. It did not seen in the same league as the Mudman at all. Just seemed cheaper all round.

Suunto core is nice, but way higher than the budget layed down in the original post (£100ish)

yup - still thinking mudman over the ironman

those suunto cores are nice, but a *lot* more expensive.

for £50 delivered, the mudman seems hard to beat as an all round, rugged watch.

i know it doesn't have the altimeter, barometer, thermometer, compass etc etc, but those are features i really don't need.

what i need is a rugged (main thing) watch that's not expensive (next main thing) that tells the time and has a stop watch. end of biggrin

Well, I did say "ish" wink
I am slightly concerned about spending that much tho in case I start to worry about it getting damaged.... maybe back to square one?!

Mudman looks a bit chunky for my taste; think I'll head to argos and fiddle with the g-shocks.

BUT I think possibly I've found an answer to "what do you want for Christmas?" this year as I'm not in a hurry and the Suuntos are calling to me wink

I see there are loads of G-Shocks on Ebay shipping from Hong Kong. Are these legit or knock-offs?

I've been looking at getting a G-Shock to wear when touring on the bike and don't ask me why (maybe because I'm a child of the '80s, I've become fixated on the GLX5600-7. It also looks a lot thinner than the round faced watches too, so would be better to fit under my motorbike jacket/gloves. Typically though, its much more expensive (~£180) than the rest, but there are some on Ebay that are around £40 + £10 p&p. Tempting, but it's no good getting a watch for rugged outdoor stuff to find out it's a Chinese knock-off that's not waterproof or shockproof.
