'Car charger' 1 'tomtom 710' nil

I managed to break the windscreen cradle on my 710, the little pin that the car charger goes on to, broke off & is currently stuck in the charger.
Somebody has given me their spare cradle & I purchased a new car charger from tomtom's site.
I plugged it in to my van today & the tomtom went up in smoke
I've spoken to the repairs department, and they've asked me to send all Three components back, hopefully they'll repair it FOC.... It's almost 2 years old.
I've metered the charger & it no longer has an output, however there's a short circuit between the pos & neg, I'm getting 7k on the multimeter . The guy in technical thinks the car charger(transformer) has let all 12volts through to the unit instead of dropping it down to 5 volts.
Semi glad I paid the extra & bought the charger direct from tomtom now
