Multimedia Socket
Discussion
Well I know it can be done to the A3/S3 do I would have thought it would be similar for the Mk5 Golf.

For a MK5 Golf you have a couple of options:
-Buy the VW iPod lead that can be fed through to glovebox or armrest
-Buy an aftermarket link that will connect to back of the RCD300 (presuming this is the radio yours has) which would give you USB and standard aux links via the cd-changer socket
A VW Dealer will probably suggest the former and charge £100 or thereabouts for it. The actual part itself isnt worth much but they charge a lot for it and the fitting cost to, even if its an easy enough DIY task.

i like the first option. haha. Yes the guy at VW had really no clue what i was talking about. He kept saying theres an ipod lead for £150. I said socket, he said lead etc. then he said you cant have the socket becuase my radio model is too old for it to have an AUX button. However i dont see this on other newer radios.
He is partly right, the socket can't be retrofitted (using OEM parts), but the cable can. 150 is expensive but I guess the dealers have some margin on these things. Its about 80ish of eBay for the cable on its own.
As for this "Aux" button, never seen one of them on a Golf before lol, so that was a lie.
EDIT: Perhaps this socket can be retrofitted, but I've never seen it done on a Golf before and looks like it wouldnt be an easy (or cheap) job.
