I have noticed that there are hardly ANY threads about any old VW's

Considering the following they have its such a shame

With 22 million beetles alone being sold and millions of campers on top of that its a mystery

Or are aircooled things not a very popular topic

Anyone else????

yep i have noticed it to, especially strange when you consider how often Mk1 an 2 golf gti get mentioned in a positive way. The mk2 GTI SOTW got quite a few people talking but didnt bring out that many dubbers.

There are a handful of people who regularly contribute to VW related topics DrG is 1st one i can think of but not that many.

do you get on any other forums/clubs

This is possibily coz older Vee-dubs are a lot more niche, with more forum /mags etc to suit. I s'pose the PH's strapline "speed matters" is a bit of a giveaway to tho..

I agree with the first part to an extent. Its more a case of there being so many different VW clubs rather than 1 or 2 big ones that enthusiasts get distributed across more clubs. Club GTI used to be a much bigger club but many members are now part of 3 or 4 other clubs as well and a lot of the core members are more middle age and 'SOME' of the youngsters dont really fit in quite so well and rather the less technical more banter clubs..

The second part of your comment - Utter Balls. PH - Speed Matters what a joke - why the hell do you see so many discussions about diesel saloons and average cars... a mk1/2 gti will hold its own against the majority of modern cars. For the record its a MK2 golf that currently has the Fastest FWD 1/4 time in the UK and im aware of several golfs that are part of the SUB 10s club, not exactly what you call slow!

Ssssssshhhhhhhh, don't let my boss know I'm on here wink

By old Veedubs do you mean aircooled or early watercooled?

The comments above sum it up really; there are a LOT of VW clubs around the country now and a lot of VW people simply will not own or look at anything else. It's not neccesarily a blinkered view, it's just that the community is so much fun a lot of people wouldn't want to leave.

There's actually a decent depth of watercooled knowledge on here and a lot of MK2, 3 and Corrado owners. Audi knowledge on here too is excellent with loads of A, S and RS owners. Unsure why so many people simply post a link to RS246.

Aircooled for the most part seems limited to a few pics in Readers Rides. Wonder where the're hiding...

The above comments pretty much explain why I didn't post much on here. When I had my Corrado VR6 I used the Corrado forum and when I had my Mk1 Golfs I used the Mk1 Golf forum and ClubGti. I'm always pretty busy at work so tend to find one forum for my needs and stick with it.

Err, im certainly well aware of what GTi's etc are capable of, im talking about "older" VW's as in Beetles, Splittys, Variants etc, like what the OP was talking about.

haha @ DrG - i wont tell if you dont tell ;-) PH = not for bosses

Alright as a youngster my interpretation of older isnt quite as old as some of the rest of you an although i am capable of reading i overlooked the AIR cooled theme to the op. MY BAD- accept my apologies!

The air cooled scene in my view is a large community possibly more so than the water cooled, i go to BVF and occasionally visit a couple of mates who are part of a local air cooled club an the clubs interact a lot better than some of the water cool eg E38 vs CGTI.

There are still plenty of vans/beetles etc around but the best vehicles only appear during show season and then get hid away. Most of the people i know with campers and beetles also have some kind of water cooled dub as well as a daily driver.

As for why they dont post on here - maybe a AIR Cooled sub section in the forum would attract more of them? Scanning through the first page of the VW/Audi forum the majority of posts relate to less than 5 year old cars! Come to think of it why is there VW/Audi as one forum and yet Skoda, Seat get their own sections. Look at the MINI section - 1 for classic 1 for new - a similar WATER and AIR VW forums would encourage more people to post!!

I agree, would be interesting to see how it went down. There was a post only today in the Porsche forum about a guy in interested in dropping a 911 lump in his old Beetle, has already had an objection as to why it was posted in the Porsche section in the first place. Certainly no objections from me tho..

Dave, i see you're a Glos boy, i've got a couple of Coupe Quattros you may have seen around, a red v6 and a green S2,give us a flash if you in your Golf. biggrin

wonder how/if we could suggest to admin that the forums be split?

I certainly will keep an eye out for you an your Audis - seriously like the Audi coupes an the S2 is the ultimate and i dont think there is any chance one could drive past me without me noticing. Are you a fan of the older UR coupes as well?
I wont be in my golf at the moment though as i took it off the road at end of last year for a engine swap which turned into a full strip down of the engine bay, stripped the underside, a repainted/resealed, all interior out, part rewired and its currently 99% done. Just need to get it running as im having problems with the clifford alarm- its not deactivating the immobaliser so fuel pump gets cut after few seconds - its driving me crazy as im despirate to drive it!

Hi anybody. The OP caught my eye as I'm just looking at a Polo 1.0CL for my son as a first motor. I know it's perhaps not quite in the same vein as the Beetle tone of the OP but thing is it's a 1985 1 owner from new with 50K odd miles on it.

It's generally sound with good straight panels sweet motor and even some decent boots on it ! To cap it all it has Tax to 02/09 & MoT to Aug 09. I reckon it'll be a handy little number for him but I was wondering are there any known issues with them (as far as people can recall !). Also as everything is non-servo -brakes & non power steering etc how easy is it to upgrade to better running gear?

I've been told these models are popular for dropping complete GTi front sub frame& motor in with same discs..
All comments welcomed .
Cheers Chris.

Yeah, would love a UR as well as a bit of a project car but got to much on as it is. Good luck with the Golf, its the fiddly little things that are the biggest pain in the arse(especially electrics) im sure you'll get there in the end chap. If you dont see the S2, im sure you'll hear it soon anyway...LOL

all the best

Hi there, probably not the best place to find info on mk2 polos. BUT lucky for you ive had one an my bro has just sold his 1.3GT if few weeks ago. The best place to find info would be clubpolo.co.uk.

Anyhow, you can upgrade the brakes and servo by using polo G40 parts, i think hubs, calipers, discs, pads an servo will all fit. As for power steering - well as far as i know the first polos to feature PAS were mk4s ie 1997>. the chances of the rack and pump fitting are slim without massive amounts of fabrication.

This is mine, currently has a 1700 T4 lump, but changing for a 1600 T1 next weekend, will be pootling about in it but mainly prepping for the Oz trip next summer. This weekend Ive been stripping out the old carpets and sorting the floor pans for rust proofing. smile
