Hello,

I've been living in my (mortgaged) flat for over 4 years and still get post for past rental occupants. I started off returning it all, but to be honest I haven't been bothered to do that for quite a while. Usually I just bin it, it can't be that important after all this time, can it?

Wrongly I know, I've opened some important looking post not addressed to me and a previous occupant has got a court order over a small debt. I guess I've been binning previous demands from whoever they owe. Oops.

Will it affect my credit score or should I just forget it?

Thanks

I had the same thing happen after I bought my house. Write back to them explaining the situation and ask them to confirm in writing that they will stop sending demands to your house.

I returned mail for the first year and now open everything to check that it's not another court order. Haven't had any problems since.

Contact the court and the creditor, and explain to them that the matter relates to the previous occupant of the property, who has gone away, and you should be fine. We had a similar experience when the police turned up with an arrest warrant for our flat's previous occupant - though in that case they asked to see some ID.
