Would this be a really bad idea?
Discussion
I am HOPING to get the cylinder heads back on the car this weekend. Since, it has not run for nearly 2 years, I hope to start it up just to make sure it still does !( and it would be prudent to check for leaks etc having just done the heads).
The trouble is, the next job is to finish painting the rear of the chassis. I am putting that off, as I am hoping my ramp will be working in the next couple of months, which will make for much easier working under the car.
Being lazy, I don't really want to fit the exhaust, just to have to remove it when I do the painting.
Would it be a really bad idea to run the engine with the manifolds on, but not main exhaust? I don't mind about the noise, I am more worried about hot gas burning or melting something. I am only talking about tick over for a few minutes to check for leaks, not reving it or driving it. Otherwise, as the exhaust has that flexible front section, can I connect it up, but just leave lying on the garage floor.

My only concern would be not hearing any potential problems with the engine after reassembly.
Agree...Slip the exhaust on as you said, you can put something under the main box & take some of the stress off the flexi & run it for a bit longer

I wouldn't just let it tick over.... but i'm no expert
