Surely the most annoying type of person in the world, they have the ability to take you from calm to world war 3 in under 4.2 seconds!

My wife had a small parcel delivered via recorded delivery, but as Royal Mail don't post to our house until after lunch there's never anyone one in to sign/accept delivery so we get those little indecipherable cards shoved though instead.

The following day we get another card with a wait 48 hours and collect.

Never usually a problem, so this morning I set off down to the depot, queued for nearly an hour and handed over the 2 cards.

RM - 'Do you have any ID?'

Me - I hand them my license.

RM - 'This isn't addressed to you'

Me - 'I know, it's addressed to my wife, note same surname'

RM - 'She'll have to sign for it'

Me - 'But she's at work'

RM - 'We can have it re-delivered and she can sign for it then'

Me - 'But you don't deliver before she's set off to work, so we'll be back here'

RM - 'You're not being very helpful'

Me - 'You're not being very reasonable'

RM - 'Well if she doesn't come in, we'll have to return it'

Me - 'Look, I have the 2 RM cards, and the same surname, it's obvious it's for my wife, I fail to see the problem'

RM - 'She'll have to come in, it's policy'

- 5 minute circular argument later -

Me - 'I refuse to play your silly games, return the item to sender'

Instant rage, makes me want to reach over the counter and end the annoying tt'ess.

No-one else can cause as much irritation as a Jobsworth, they rule supreme.

Odd.

Had something addressed to the missus earlier in the week bt Royal Mail recorded delivery.

Popped in to the 'office to collect with Driving Licence in hand. Signed for the item (note, we're not married so have different surnames) and job done.

That's not jobsworth. That's you grumbling about their perfectly acceptable rules and making a fuss. Royal Mail won't release parcels to anyone else without proper ID. If my wife picks something up for me she takes her ID and mine and there are no problems.

Amen to that brother.

I hate them.

I had one at the Gym, he actually come down stairs after seeing me come in on security camera to annoy me.

I called him a 'Jobsworth '. He got all uppity so I said it louder and in his face.

My company changed our corporate gym membership a week later, noting his attitude as a reason for them loosing 100+ employees worth of business.

Hope he got sacked. Common sense should prevail.

Shopping for a jacket. Had on huge jumper which needed to come off in order for jacket to go on.

Store is open until 10. It is 8:30. Conversation between me and changing room girl:

S: Can I try this jacket on please?

C: Sorry the changing rooms are closed

S: But the store is open until 10

C: Sorry, but it's store policy

S: But, I can't buy this if I can't try it on - surely that defeats the purpose

C: Sorry but I can't help you. You can return it if it doesn't fit.

S: Why should I waste the petrol and you earn interest on my money just because you won't let me take two steps into that room.

C: Looks at me nonplussed

S: Strips off jumper right in front of her and tries on jacket there and then.

C: runs off in horror and I step into changing rooms and view mirror, put jumper back on and buy jacket.

I think the store may be revising their changing room opening times.

Fair play to RM if you ask me (which no-one did).

I wouldn't want my wife collecting my regular delivery of 'continental' reading material.

they'll sign the parcel over to any tom/dick/harry if they answer the door, it's the same when you turn up with a licence indicating the same address. I fail to understand their 'increased security' when it comes to collecting the parcels.

My local sorting office is ace.

Turn up, say there is a parcel for you and they hand it over!

No checks at all!

Perfectly acceptable to you perhaps, but the same RM will let you or neighbour sign for a parcel on a different day so it's bks.

Carrying ID for someone else isn't any more valid anyway without them there to verify it.

It was only a book from Amazon anyway we're not talking a consignment of uranium that there's a need to be extra secure.

Jobsworths, hate them.

It's all part of "1975 syndrome" which has brought us inflation, unemployment etc etc.

Around about 1980 IBM launched the first PC computer and the scene was set for sweeping away all the old jobsworths and their mind-numbing stupidity. Through the 80s and 90s all went well with the mighty computer streamlining efficiencies into every walk of life.

then the politicians realised what computers could do and decided to make everything more complicated - because they could. And then they gave a PC or a laptop or a palm to every clown in every department of every monolithic organisation and HEY PRESTO! We're back where we started. With cretinous jobsworths obstructing every aspect of life up and down the country.

And that little worm Mandelson oiling his way back into the cabinet....

Send for Thatcher! idea

From Amazon - that's even better!

For the record, I've never needed to show ID when collecting stuff from our sorting office. But they always leave Amazon stuff outside the front door if I'm out! Brillient service - assuming their insurance covers thief and electronics busted by being left in the rain of course wink

You didn't explain what you did to prompt the 'Jobsworth' to come running after you in the first place.

On the face of it this sounds like you just acted like an obnoxious arse.

You're right, sorry, it does!

I didn't have my membership card on me, but I did have my business card and ID on me and the woman behind the desk had already given me a towel and released the barrier for me to go through. She knew who i was and that i'd just forgot my membership.

He came running out of the door behind reception just as i was about to go through the gate and asked the girl if i had my membership card. Then made a fuss about me not coming through without it. He even knew I had membership because he served me the day before.

I'm not sure what i did to irk him so much as to do this (I had forgotten my card once before on 'his watch') when i first joined.

My postie even comes up to the third floor (with lift) to deliver my parcels instead of leaving it down with the mail boxes, great guy.
Me giving him a tenner each Xmas may help though. biggrin

Fair enough, although making a point of making sure everyone can hear you calling him a '' and disadvantaging the entire staff (obviously the woman who let you in was fine) by causing the cancellation of 100+ memberships in a recession still seems extremely obnoxious. Why not just discretely submit a complaint to the management about that one jobsworth?

This was about 8-9 months ago, before we knew a recession was coming. My compliant to our HR manager was one of many. I wasn't wholy responsible for this and I wasn't the only person to complain about this one guy.

The shouting was just disbelief, i'm sure i'm not the only person who would react like that.

I've never had a problem before, that's the point, the jobsworth wanted my wife to go in, nothing else would work.

The sorting office in Rugby is fine, as long as the address and surname are the same they don't care.
