I am still 'playing' with my DSLR, but feel that I am missing something both in the technicalities of settings to use etc, plus also perhaps some further guidance on composing the shot. Maybe even with some help on photoshop type stuff. I dont know if there is a book that covers all of these aspects, but would welcome some recomendations that I can put on my Christmas list!

You have to get his sense of humour (or should that be "Humor"?). But I like Scott Kelby's writing style:

Here and here for some of the books in the range. They're all written in the sort of style to put messages across quite simply - a bit like "...for Dummies" books.

Im glad you recommended Scott, Im just about to order Digital photography 1&2 from Amazon.

Ive got his CS2 book and found it very usefull, if slightly quirky in style at times.

To the OP, you must read Michael Langfords Basics book as well. A bit stodgy, but gives you the understanding required in my view.

I got Michael Langford's "Starting Photography" as a birthday present for my mum. I've got a feeling that having the odd read at this book is what got me started. It goes right back to the basics of how to make the most simple cameras and gives quite a good guide to how cameras have become more and more advanced. Has lots of handy tips for all aspects of taking, storing and editing pictures for us beginner type folk.
