The best Bluray concert/music discs?
Discussion
We just got the new Pioneer "Susano" surround amp in at my shop, and we want some new Bluray discs to show it off to customers. Are there any decent live performances out on Bluray that make use of the new uncompressed sound formats? I'm not as worried about the artist as I am about the quality of the recording, but Celine Dion or Take That will not be considered! We always used to use "The Dance" by Fleetwood Mac, and the "Pulse" Pink Floyd DVD to great effect.
I recently bought Tiesto - Elements of Life World Tour from Copenhagen. The picture quality is awesome, the music is fantastic (I'm biased of course!) I would definitely give it the
for putting it on a big 1080p LCD/Plasma.

Blu-Ray uses "MLP" technology. As such it's a Lossless compression system. IE it's compressed but keeps a record of the discarded "bits" in order to reconstruct them. It's rather like "winzip". The idea is that it can construct a real 24/96 7 channel audio output. The "old" 24/96 tracks from DVD should be able to be used fully reconstructed but you might have to do a bit of listening to find which have been mixed properly. Hi Fi buffs are still waiting to see if anybody does High Band Stereo audio disc format.
P.S. Dolby bought the rights to rename MLP in it's use in Dolby TureHD.

IIRC MLP was the format used on DVD-A discs
I have a few DVD-A disc's and a system capable playing them
They do sound very good but how much of theis is due to careful re-mixing/mastering and how much to the higher bit rate I have no idea.
DVD-A and SACD are both going nowhere and I really cant imagine blu-ray audio doing any better for the same reasons.
The majority people want easily portable (mp3 player), downloadable, copyable format. DVD-A, SACD, blu-ray are none of these. The majority people cant tell the diferance or dont care between 128MP3 and CD so why go for a "better format" which just decreaces the accessability of the music

DVD-A can sound pretty good but your typical home-cinema/av customer wants a demo that shows off sound AND picture, hence the requirement for a performance disc. Music shows up the strengths and weaknesses of a surround system much better that a Foley'd action-movie soundtrack of synthesised gunshots etc.

As stated MLP is used in DolbyHD. Dolby wanted a superior sound to go with Blu-Ray's HD picture. To do that they used MLP instead of AC-3(Dolby Digital). It IS used by DVD-Audio discs for a 5 channel mix along with a Hi Band stereo and Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 channel mix. That's what the DVD-Audio Standard dictates. The older "lossy" Dolby Digital is still used on DVD-Video.I have a few DVD-A disc's and a system capable playing them

As for what people listen to Portable sources have always been popular. Witness the old tape Walkman style players which sold in their millions. There quality has rarely been an issue. The size of ear phones used limits how well they sound. In car and in home the CD is king. The attempts to update it were basically undermined by the flood of cheap DVD players from China. They didn't bother with it as it would mean they had to buy a licence. When do the Chinese buy a licence if they could help it.
