More BiB than ever before!?
Discussion
Heard a report on Radio 2 this morning that caught my attention and wanted the Bib who post on here to give their opinions.
Apparantly we now have 136,000 police officers employed in the UK. Thats roughly one police officer for every 412 people. This is the highest ever figure and 6000 over the target set by the home secretary for 2003/04.
My question is,
WHERE ARE THEY ALL!!
We all know that scameras are used to control traffic offences (toungue in cheek). Most small/ local police stations are now only open a few hours a day due to the lack of officers. They certainly aren't out and about on the beat, nor do they appear to be out investigating robberies, burgalries car theft or damage etc (merely extrapolated from comments on the Gassing forums). SO where are all these extra officers?
Is the paperwork situation now so bad that you BiB are stuck behind a desk for a vast portion of your shift? If so whatever happened to the civilian employees that were meant to be doing this work for you?
Or are the targets and areas of concentration now so different from what the public want that we never see you?
Or are you all down the pie and doughnut shop

Seriously I would be interested to hear your opinions on this statement and if its made any effect on your workloads and or crime detection/prevention rates.

In the 28 months starting January, 2001 I spent 134 days at court. I only gave evidence in 18 cases. There was one solicitors' firm in Hastings where I attended every time and was never called. I turned up once to find four police officers, only one of whom, the OIC, was called as the chap pleaded guilty.
I was once at Lewes Crown Court on three jobs all scheduled on the same day. I spent two days reading books and was then stood down.
When I complained to CPS I was told, politely but firmly, to go away.
If you accept that I work about 230 days a year, the actual impact on my real work can be appreciated.

And having Welsh lessons in North Wales
I am told that local Welsh BiB's are going on diversity awareness courses and are receiving lectures from a Muslim, a transexual and a Welsh speaker!!!!
Wonder how the Welsh speaker got into that likkle group?
They are also being given mouse mats with written advice such as, "Don't give your colleagues nicknames or play practical jokes: it may offend them"
Oh, I may have mentioned this but the Community Beat Managers are being trained in the use of the LT 20 laser gun. Nice. Nicked by the local bobby in a black hat and, in one case, hiding behind an unmarked green X reg Focus.
I agree with tvrslag. Where are they all? Are there now so many crimes that even this increase in numbers is not enough? Why can they not deal with burglaries, car crime, ABH etc? Why can they not attend "criminal on scene" events for hours?
I have no doubt that the majority of our BiB (good and bad ones) are actually very busy for there whole shift. Possibly even working lots of unpaid overtime. So how come we have more but they are unable to deal with the public face of crime? The times when people really need to see a copper. The times that would really boost the general publics view of the police doing their jobs.

The single BIB reply from Derek has just proven what many of us suspect and to some degree know through unfortunate circumstance.
The BiB are just simply to busy, tied up in rubbish like "awareness courses" and getting stuck in court for hours on end, and dealing with ridiculous cheif superintendant target orientated nonsense to do the real job at hand. It must therefore be fairly obvious that the target set is woefully short of what is required to support the community at large and to clear the obviously substantial backlog of work and investigations. I'm not suprised this has ben a pretty low key announcement, They have achieved the target for the number of officers yet it has made absolutely no diffrence on the response times, detection rates or whatever other measurable is used to regulate the BiB.
Its another typical example of money being thrown at the problem from all angles, by the government by the local councils etc but non of it actually gets to where its needed. It dissapears in that suspicious zone known as the the labour coffers, a place where money enters but never leaves, unless its in the shape of a DHSS voucher for an MPV for the latest bunch of asylum seekers.
edited to add, I suspect it must be pretty soul destroying for the BiB on the ground to see these kinds of figures but without seeing any benefit.

I think all the police are stuck in David Blunketts rear passage. ![]()
Just more Labour Government Statistical lies.
I think it is just some of the senior ones. I have heard it said that once a bobby makes superintendent, he becomes a politician and having been to several Police Community Consultative Group meetings, it seems that is correct.
I recall a few years ago one Super, Super N****n, telling us he was having 11 shiny new police officers in the next couple of weeks, "But I am going to place them in Colwyn Bay HQ where they will really make a difference. If I tasked them to the local stations, you would not even notice"
Well he was partly right. We haven't noticed.
I have just returned from an early turn shift, working as a traffic officer in North West London. To cover the whole of North West London, we had two traffic cars.
The remainder of Traffic Officers on my shift (about 6) had been deployed up town to deal with anti robbery patrols. I spent the whole day racing from one side of the ground to the other trying to help out both colleagues and M.O.P.
My Traffic Dept as a whole seems interested in figures, we employ more PC`s to sit in offices inputting figures and churning out information than we put out on the streets.
We occasionally get new chaps in Traffic but they have no driving courses and can`t get courses because there are no driving instructors.
My wife works in a busy Police Child Protection Team , the unit already has run out of money, they are under staffed , have to use their own motorvehicles and regularly work 10 hour days, dealing with at least 10 cases each.
Local Police Divisions are staffed with upwards of 60% Police Officers with under 2 years service, you are literally an old sweat in this job if you have more than 4 years in.
The figures provided I don`t believe for one minute, it is a crying shame....anyway i look forward to my next awareness day...blah
