Whats to buy, Plasma or Lcd?????????????

I,m looking at buying a new TV, got around £1200 to spend, not fussed if its 40 to 50 inch, but whats the difference between Plasma and Lcd? The young CHAV in Comet serving me said Plasma not as god as Lcd, and said it depends what we watch!! Any advive greatly appreciated.

I had a first generation Pioneer plasma bought in 2002. Completely burnt out screen by 2006. Have bought LCD ever since.

Ive got a 40" LCD, but that's the limit i'd say.
Anything over 40" and it's got to be plasma. LCD is ok at larger sizes as long as your not sat close to it as it will look crap

LCD - slimmer, weigh less, don't get screenburn, don't break as soon as you pick them up, don't use excessive amounts of electric. Plasma - slightly better picture quality, on average.

We bought a 42" plasma panasonic recently and the salesman set up a blue-ray player playing to a LCD and a plasma at the same time to let us see instantly the difference between the two. Plasma showed a much better picture in terms of resolution and the depth of the black background. Fast moving action shots were handled much better by the plasma, he brought our attention to the number plates of cars moving past the camera. On the LCD it was impossible to read the digits, but on the plasma it was crystal clear.

Ask your salesman if he can do the same for you. We thought the LCD had a good picture until we saw it back-to-back with the plasma. I had also heard of some of the myths about plasma not lasting and I think this was true about some of the earlier ones but many friends have had plasma TVs for a while now with no problems.

Forget all the old stories about screen burn. Both LCD & Plasma screens (if good quality) are rated for about 100,000 hours these days and screen burn isn't an issue. The answer is to get a decent Plasma (e.g. Panasonic), especially if it's a large screen.

Definately plasma, especially at that size. In your budget look at the Panasonic PZ series.

Panasonic or Pioneer plasma. LCD picture quality is nowhere near as good as Plasma to my eyes.

All the usual crap about plasmas is always spouted. With modern plasmas, you'll be bored of the telly before the screen has used it's life.

Say you watch TV for 10 hours a day, then

10x7=70 hrs a week

70x52=3640 hrs a year

With Panasonic screens claiming atleast 60,000 screen life, so do the maths, it should last for years.

Screen burn is also nowhere near as big an issue as it used to be.

Without a doubt, at that screen size plasma is the way to go.

I recently saw a Panasonic 50" Viera 1080p for £1200 online with directtvs.com iirc.

It's not as simple as that - you need to buy a screen size based on your viewing distance because if you sit too close (e.g. have a 50" for a three foot view!) it'll look crap regardless of the screen type.

LCD all the way though. Wouldn't touch plasma with a barge pole personally.
